You need to go to the website of the PC manufacturer and download and
install the correct drivers for your graphics card and for your audio
chipset.

If you have the original disks that came with the PC, you might have the
sound drivers there or (depending the PC brand) you may have a directory on
the C: drive with the files you need. If may be something like "\Drivers" or
"dell\drivers" or something similar. Again, depending on the brand, you
might have a setup program that does the install for you or you may have to
manual reinstall the drivers using Device Manager. Worse case, as Dana
mentioned, you'll just have to download the files.

Im having the same problem. go to device manager via left click on my
computer, click on properties than hardware tab, launch device manager. look
for if there is an exclamasion point on sound devices and reinstall the
drivers. I trying to down load the drivers from microsoft. last resort is to
reload XP.....
pain in the ars.....

I'm having what is think is the same problem. I have installed the drivers
for the audio and for the graphics card, graphics card from the website and
the audio from the cd that i got. This is right after i have reloaded xp btw.
Whenever i try to open the sound control it says something along the lines of
"a sound mixer isn't installed. Im not sure whether im not getting any sound
due to lack of the correct driver, or just because i dont have any sound
control installed. Anyone know where i can get the sound control thing? also,
i have already tried the mycomputer/preferences thing. It didn't work.
thanks
