Hello,
Manufacuturer-specific (Dell, Hewlett-Packard, IBM and so forth) Recovery Discs are typically designed to work with computers based on a type of identification message which is stored as part of the computer's BIOS in what is called the http://www.dmtf.org/ (Desktop Management Interface), or DMI for short. In particular, the values for the Manufacturer and Model are checked by the http://www.microsoft.com/ (Microsoft) http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ (Windows) installation disc during the initial pre-installation configuration. If the values in the computer's BIOS match those on the recovery disc then the installation should proceed as normal.
You
should be able to use a hard disk drive from a different manufacturer or model than the original one as long as it is recognized by the computer, however, if the recovery disc does not work you will need contact the computer vendor for assistance or, as Greyknight17 noted, use a full version of the operating system installation disc.
