There probably isn't *one* answer to this. You'll have to do some
troubleshooting.
* Which e-mail program? Outlook Express or web-based? More information would
be helpful.
1. If your antivirus program is scanning e-mail as it's downloaded or sent,
turn this feature off. It's unnecessary. Attachments will still be scanned
as you open or save them.
2. Disable (as a test) any third-party programs which are interacting with
e-mail... spamblockers, etc.
3. Malware might be causing this.

You will want to run Ad-aware, Spybot and (if running WinXP) MS Anti-Spyware
(Beta.)
