| I'm a new user to Media Center and I'm trying to set it up. It seems to have
set up properly other than one issue. When I change the channel with my
Media Center remote, the channel changes on my tv, but not on my computer.
It's as if the channel did change...the guide says it's now on the new
channel, but the video doesn't change...it stays on channel 3. Any ideas how
to fix this?

| I should add...when I am setting up the tv signal, I set it up to work with a
set top box and when it gets to the screen "Select a working tv signal," I
have the options of Channel 2, 3, 4, S-Video, and Composite Video. I get a
signal on channels 2 and 3. The channel that my computer stays on is the
channel I pick at this screen. I want the cahnnels to change on my computer
obviously, but I don't know how to fix it.

hi there. I had the same problem, the computer would say the channel changed
but the picture would stay the same as before. My problem was the ir sensor
cable. It wasnt' over the correct spot on the cable box. Are you using the
remote sensor cable? To find the correct position, use a flashlight and
shine it on the front of the box. You should see a box show up when the
light is shined on it. Try to put your ir sensor over this spot and try to
change the channels. I hope this helps.

Doug Knox MS-MVP, I have configured MCE to work with my top box, so that's
not the problem. I'm pretty sure that the remote is supposed to change the
tv channel though...my problem is that it doesn't change the channel on the
computer...it says the channel has changed but the video stays on channel 2
or 3 or whatever channel it found the signal on during the setup. >> Stay informed about: The channel changes on the tv, but not on the computer |

If you are feeding your MCE tuner card from your STB via coax the channel on
the computer should not change since the STB always resends what ever
channel it is tuned to out on the same channel (usually channel 3 or 4) over
its coax out connection.
If you are feeding your MCE via S-Video (a better choice than via coax if
you have it available) then there is no channel to change on the computer
since you are not using the computers tuner just its video in capability.

I think I'm quite confused. During the setup, there is a step that asks me
to change the channel with the MCE remote pointing at the tuner and it asks
if the channel changes on the set top box. The answer is supposed to be yes
so as far as I'm aware, the channel is supposed to change on the tv. I can
change the channel on my tv, using my set top box remote without it affecting
the channel on my computer...I think that's supposed to happen. I just can't
get the channel on the computer to change when I use the MCE remote...it says
the channel chages, but it
stays on channel 3 or whatever channel I picked as having a signal in one of
the steps.
Now, JW replied and said something about an S-Video cable...I have my set
top box hooked up to my computer through a coax cable...is this why it's not
working? Would my problem go away if I hooked it up with an s-video cable?
And if so, since it would be bypassing the tuner, will it still go through
the encoder so that I can record the channels, or will I just be able to
watch the channels?
"Doug Knox MS-MVP" wrote:
> No, the remote should change the channel on the computer, since its the internal tuner that the MCE PC is using. However you're getting your signal from the PC to the TV doesn't matter. If its standard RF, then its usually channel 3. If its Audio/Video cables, then it doesn't matter what channel the TV is on, there's usually a Line In selection. >> Stay informed about: The channel changes on the tv, but not on the computer |

Hi, I'm new to media center also.I was having the same problem as you were. I
finally connected mine to S video similiar to the connection you changed to.
Like you now it works. I still don't understand why you cannot use the
straight cable hookup. Does anyone know how to configure it to work that
way??? Thanks and Have a nice day.

Possibly your STB was set to always output using Channel 4 over (COAX)/TV
out instead of Channel 3. This setting is normally controlled using a small
switch on the back of the STB close to the TV out connection.

I understand what your saying. But when I am linked to computer by coax even
though the remote changes the channel on the set top box correctly the
computer only shows the original channel selected in setup IE: 2 or3 or4.on
the TV I am picking correct channel match for set top box output. Thank you

Thats exactly what should happen if your STB is outputting all programs
selected over Channel 3 and your MC is set to only receive from a STB using
Coax over Channel 3 then what ever channel is actually selected on the STB
will always be sent to the computer over channel 3.
In any case you get much better quality video by using S-Video from your STB
then by using coax over channel 3 so you should not try and get the Coax
connection to work.

Thank you very much for your help I really appreciate it. I will keep my
setup with S-video. But am I understanding correctly that if the only
connection I had available was coax, then I would not be able to view any
channels selected on my set top box through the MC except channel 3 or 4???
Thank you again for your help.

I am not sure that there is a regular default channel. In the UK at least TV frequencies are split
into separate UHF TV channels the frequency being designated channel 21 and the highest channel 68.
Nowadays with many additional TV channels being used for Freeview DVB-T digital multiplexes plus the
existing 5 OTA analogue TV channels it can take a bit of juggling to find a clear channel for a VCR
or STB. The default RF output channel for a Sky digibox satellite STB is 68 (the highest) & this can
be changed via an on-screen menu to anywhere between 21 & 68. Older VCRs had a screw adjustment for
the UHF modulator with a somewhat retricted range. Newer VCRs have a digital adjustment like th
edigibox so can be tuned to any channel between 21 & 68.

I see everyones responses to the changing channel problems but I am still
having a problem. The Media Center Remote will not change the channels on my
STB but I can change the channel from the STB remote. When I use the Media
Center remote i see the red lights flashing but the channel does not change.
Right now I have if hooked up via coax. I read in a previous email to use S
video or composite so I bought a composite cable but it still does not work.
But I must admit I am not sure if I am hooking it up properly. My STB has a
red yellow and white plugs so I plugged the composite cable into the yellow
outlet. On the back of the computer I used an adapter that I put on the
composite cable so that I could plug it into the s video on the back of the
PC. What am I doing wrong? I have been working with HP they said it was the
remote sensor and sent me a new one but that didn't fix the issue. This has
been going on for 6 months now.
