PLEASE HELP...XP won't read card reader/mass storage dev.

hi, Sparda. Thanks for responding. Yes, I uninstalled and reinstalled drivers. Could it be a corrupt/ missing file in xp? I can't think of ANYTHING I haven't tried. I believe similar problems were corrected with release of SP2. Could I try re-installing SP2 over my current installation? What I'm trying to do here is avoid a repair install (had BIG problems last time I tried that), or, of course, a fresh re-install.

I asume you have tried the *not working* hardware with another computer?

Yep. EVERYTHING (hardware, cards, cables) were checked on my laptop, all functioned fine. I can find soooo LITTLE info ANYWHERE on the net re: this same problem. Very uncommon, I presume. My luck.

I've got a similar problem and I think its linked to something I installed.

I have one of those mass storage 3.5" card readers too. I installed it over a year ago and has been working fine until April/May. That's when I noticed my drives had disappeared. At the same time that was when my Drive A also disappeared.

I deleted the floppy driver and forced a refresh and got the floppy icon back on the My Computer but the drives on the mass storage is still missing.

I have confirmed everything is good with the drivers and checked in the Computer Management/Disk Management window that the computer sees the removable media but no drive letters have been assigned.

When I try to assign drive letters to the removable media I get an error from the Logic Disk Manager

"The operation did not complete because the partition or volume is not enabled. To enable the partition or volume, restart the computer"

I have reset the computer many times and no success.

When I put in my removable harddrive, the USB picks up the drive and displays the letter without any problems.

I also put in a blank harddrive and reinstalled windows from scatch with SP2 and it works perfectly fine.

I deleted the USBSTOR.SYS in system32/drivers, also disk.sys and PartMgr.sys in system32/drivers, then tried to rediscover the missing drives. No success

There's definitely something I installed but I don't know what

When I am in Computer Management/Disk Management and insert a memory card, refresh the screen, the partition of the memory and usage is shown. I just can not assign a letter to the removable media.

Any ideas?

I have exactly the same problem. I know it is software, as I have installed XP on another partition and when I boot to this the card reader appears in windows explorer. I have checked the drivers, and on the problem XP boot there are 2 upper class filters 'PartMgr' and 'GoBack2K'. The latter does not appear on the other XP boot, so this maybe the problem. However, I am not sure how to edit the registry to delete it.
