I'm just wondering what the main differences are between these two operating
systems and if you can upgrade from XP Media Center to XP Professional? My
husband says he needs XP Professional so that he can connect to his computer
at work through a VPN since he has XP Professional there, but I bought a
computer with XP Media Center not really realizing that I did that. We have
the software for XP Professional, but it doesn't say anywhere that you can
upgrade to that from XP Media Center. >> Stay informed about: XP Media Center vs. XP Professional |

Hi Valerie
The MCE is built on XP Pro with the ability to join Domains removed without
a hack. Nothing should prevent him from connecting to his work computer thru
VPN unless it requires him to join the work Domain and if so he can do fresh
install of XP Pro if the Product is Full Retail. If XP Pro is Upgrade then
you cannot upgrade from MCE and you may have to try the "Banana" hack but I
have not heard if this works with VPN or not. If his work Domain is Small
Business Server an alternative is Remote Web Workplace which requires no
modifications to MCE which will connect out of the box without using VPN.

Ok, thanks for this. We do have the full retail version of XP Pro. I'm not
sure what a banana hack is, so my next question is, what is it I should have
him ask his IT folks about how he needs to connect to work? Would it be
correct for me to say that he needs to ask if from home he needs to "join the
work domain" ? Because I already know that he does need a VPN.

Yes - Ask if he needs to join Domain from home. If he does I would recommend
a fresh install.

Before going to all that trouble, have him try the free version of
logmein.com which should give him remote access to his work computer.

Sorry, just checking that I have this straight; are you saying that if I have
MCE on my machine and I need to connect to a work VPN and I have "Include
Windows Domain" ticked in the Options tab of the VPN connection properties,
that the whole thing will just fail to connect? Or will I just not be able
to join the domain over the VPN?
This could help explain the problem I'm having connecting, but it doesn't
seem right...

Im sorry to drudge up this old thread.
Frank wrote "The MCE is built on XP Pro"
does this mean its better then a better version of XP then Home?
Reason I ask is because I am trying to install some software on a work
laptop that has MCE and the software is supported on XP Home and Pro only,
My question should be basically, Will XP MCE cause any issues with an istall
that would or should go smoothly with XP Home?

If it installs and runs, you should run with no trouble.
In most cases if the software doesn't specifically list MCE as supported, it
probably means the manufacturer didn't bother to spend the time and money
testing and submitting it for MS approval. There have been some rare cases
of some items not running on MCE (mostly audio H/W related), but usually if
it says it will run on XP Pro, it should run on MCE.
The simplest way to find out is to try loading it, worst cases - it doesn't
install or you have to uninstall.

You need to be more specific. That question cannot really be answered in
general terms. MCE is XP Pro with extra multimedia enhancements and some of
the default settings customized to support MCE functionality. Access to
Domains is inhibited by default for instance, but for the most part it
behaves like XP Pro. On an individual basis some 3rd party software or
hardware might not be compatible with MCE .
