Did you remember to right-click on the icon (in Knoppix) for the usb
hard drive first and clear the checkbox for Read Only - *before* you
left-clicked on the icon to mount it? If you forgot to do this, that's
why you couldn't copy the files.

hard drive first and clear the checkbox for Read Only - *before* you
