When multiple user accounts exist in XP and a user doesn't interact (use the keyboard/mouse) with XP for a few minutes, XP will automatically display the Welcome/Login screen and require the user's password before continuing.

Where can that delay setting be changed?

I have a friend who's delay before the Welcome/Login screen is unbearably short and, mixed with the fact that she is using a strong password, is about to throw something hard at her PC.

I once read an article that mentioned that there is a way to change the delay setting but I haven't been able to find the setting in the usual places (the Control Panel and TweakUI). It might be that it is a Registy entry that needs to be manually entered. A Google search hasn't shown anything obvious.

I think this is all in the screensaver feature. Right click on an empty area on your Desktop and go to Properties. Go to the Screensavers tab and choose a screensaver. Under Wait, change that to the minute you want to activate the screensaver/welcome screen (make sure that box next to it is checked already first). That should do it. So if you set it to 5 minutes, after 5 minutes the screensaver should show up. When the user returns and moves the mouse/keyboard, the screensaver should go away and the welcome screen (aka login screen) should show up.

I ignored that possibility because I though there was a different option for this setting (unrelated to the screensaver). When I saw the "Require password..." field, I said to myself, "Oops! There it is!"

Thanks for the data!

I will definitely at least check my first idea first when this kind of thing comes up.

On a different topic, I visited your Web site and noticed a thread about partitioning HDs.

With that in mind: I found a MOST excellent partition and boot manager late last year. It is called "BootIt NG" (NG = Next Generation) from Terabyte Unlimited (www.terabyteunlimited.com). It came very highly recommended and my experience with it has been Excellent! I had a couple of questions and their support was fast, pleasant and thorough. The product is a delight to work with and does its job magnificently - plus some.

Have fun!
