Post subject: WMC 2005 Component Video DVD Restrictions?
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windows>mediacenter (more info?)

(reposted from microsoft.public.windowsxp.video; I didn't see this Media
Center NG)

I am trying to play commercial DVDs (e.g. Monsters Inc) using Windows XP
Media Center Edition 2005 - the media center application. Works fine with
VGA, but I get an error when using the component video output:

Cannot Play DVD
Media Center cannot play this DVD. The DVD may be in use by another
application or it may be copy-protected

When I try to play using the WinDVD, I press play, it says: "Please close
WinDVD and change to non-TV Display device".

I have an ATI Radeon x700 card in a new Windows Media Center 2005 HP
Computer. I tried both a DVI-to-Video Component adapter, as well as the
adapter cable that came with the card. Both cause the same results. The DVI
works fine, and the VGA works fine, but component output always gives the
error message. I really need to use the component output with my config, as
no other inputs will be available.

I have tried HP support, but after 3 levels of escalation, the response is
"we will email you when we have a solution". Surely someone out there has
encountered this problem & has a solution?

Any help would be greatly appreciated Smile Thanks in advance.

What resolution are you outputting via the component
connection? The HP Z545-series media centers will only
output DVD on the component connection if your video
resolution is set to 640x480 (I confirmed this with a
demo unit at CompUSA after reading about it in a manual I
downloaded from HP). Another gift from the copy-
protection mafia...

You can try setting the component output to 640x480
through the Display Properties/Settings/Advanced menu.

This is one of the reasons I lost interest in the Z545 -
it seems just plain silly to alienate all of us with
component-only HDTVs by making us go through half-a-dozen
mouse clicks and menus just to be able to watch a DVD at
lower resolutions than can be done by a $99 standalone
DVD player.

I have a different component issue with an ATI Radeon 9550 card (I can't get
it to consistantly work, sometimes it does, then i reboot and the HDTV I
have doesn't recognize it or the computer doesn't recognize the TV, either
way - no picture at all)

BUT - in my search for a cure, i think i know what your issue is. I have
read that some to most DVD's are only supported in MCE if the component
output is configured to 480i or p. It's a resolution issue you are having
and the DVD is only capable of being displayed through the computer at
640x480. That sux, because the picture quality of everything else won't be
as good, but you probably will get it to work on DVD playback consistantly.

Let me know if this helps, it may add to my cure.

Wow.

This is un-f**king believable. I just went through the pain and research to
build my own HTPC with MCE2005 to stumble upon this nugget once I hooked
everything up.

What a joke. I'm trying to play purchased DVD's. No dice (apparently
because of Macrovision). I ripped/backed up a DVD just to see if it would
work and it did.

I'm guessing that no pirate will be using the component outputs on his
Windows MCE machine to mass reproduce material. All he has to do is spend 2
minutes on the web downloading the appropriate software to rip a 1:1 copy.

So now I've got to run my HDTV in non-HDTV mode because of some paranoid
Hollywood executive. If I didn't build this thing myself, I'd be returning
it.

Way to go Microsoft.

I ended up ripping all my DVD's to the HD, and use the 'My Movies'
plugin to turn the MCE machine into a DVD changer. You could also
invest in DVDidle, but I had limited success with that. This is
definitely a big disappointment as I can't rent movies now, but
hopefully this will be fixed in the next version.

I stumbled upon DVDidle after posting my last message, and it has so far
worked flawlessly for me. $40 is a little steep, though, but I've got 29
more days to decide if watching my DVD collection without ripping it to disc
is worth it.

Why were you having limited success exactly? Did you add the ehshell.exe
program to the DVDidle list? It's been flawless so far for me.

It worked for some of the movies (I did add eshell.exe or it wouldn't
have worked at all), but movies such as TopGun just wouldn't play.

I think everyone here has missed the point.
I have XP Pro with a dual monitor setup (nv fx5700) and DVDs CANNOT be
played to the secondary monitor, due to the way the card works.
I know this is not good enough, and am sure this is not a copyright
protection!
The composite output on your MCE is most likely to be the 'secondary
monitor' for windows, and as such cannot stream the DVD image to that display.

Assuming you have a seperate VGA monitor to your HTPC, if all else fails,
you can buy an adaptor which will take the composite / s-video parts from the
VGA to the TV (allowing a through signal to the monitor also) which will get
arround this problem.

Contact the graphics card vendor for more details...

---
P.S. I may be completely wrong about the streaming to the secondary monitor,
this is only from my own experience and sounds more likely than a strange
copyright protection :S

This is just outrages. The real point is, you spend up to or over $1000 to
build a top of the line pc with MCE so you can access TV and generally the #1
thing, play DVD's, on an HDTV TV and guess what you can't unless you drop
resolution to such poor quality. Then to rectify this you have to purchase
another software spending yet more money $40 to maybe get it to work. When
all you really need to do is purchase a DVD player for now under $100 bucks
to watch your movies on TV.

Uhm Microsoft has a major issue here. MCE won't get adopted by the general
public for large entertainment systems with this kind of mess built in. It
could end up as a pretty media player for standard computers because it's
there by default when you purchase a computer instead of what Microsoft
really wants, which is to take us into a new Media age where your
entertainment system revolves around MCE and future builds. Come on...no one
saw this as an issue at Microsoft? Please!!!

I guess I'm lost here...if DVI and VGA work fine, then why don't you use
them?

This is connected to an HDTVwith composite cables, there is no vga or dvi on
the HDTV. I'm trying to setup MCI as the center piece to my entertainment
system, I think that's the real purpose of this O.S., but looks like I'm
restricted to moving it back to a basic computer setup. Sorry, but this is
frustrating, all this copy right protection is going too far and I hope
Microsoft helps fight this battle and recognizes it's going to cut into the
usefullness of it's product.

Ahh, I see. While two of my TVs have component inputs, the only thing I have
with component _outputs_ are one xBox 360 and one DVD player. Can you even
_get_ a video board with component outputs, or do you have to use a special
cable to get component from DVI or VGA?

It would be nice if MS would help fight the battle, but sadly they're as
much a pawn as we are. Basically this battle must be fought and won in
Congress, where us poor consumers are up against Hollywood special interests
(and their large campaign contributions). It's not an easy battle but
certain parts of it look more possible under the new Congress...

Yes I have an XFX nvidia geforce 7600GT card with 256 on board DDR2 ram. It
has a dongle provided with it to allow hdmi to component. I know what you
are saying about copy right protection, but I think Microsoft has a little
pull in this industry and having lead the charge with it's initial copy right
protection (which I am supportive of and understand) can do more to make sure
it's investment in resources pay out. After all I'm sure Microsoft would
like to be at the center of the home media experience and this is a fairly
big wall.
