When I try to start live tv, I get a video error message that says files
needed to display video are missing or corrupt. Any idea how to fix this
without taking media center completely out and reinstalling it?

The error means one of the following:
1. your video card and its driver do not meet MCE standards (this is the
least likely case)
2. Your TV tuner card does not support MCE or you have the standard drivers
for the card and not the MCE drivers.
2. You do not purchased or obtained an MCE compatible DVD Decoder(codec)
installed on your system.

Following is the link to the MS list of products that have been accepted
into the MCE 2005 logo program. Other products work but at least if you
have a product from the list you know that MS says it works.

I reinstalled just the drivers and that fixed the problem. Thanks for your
help.

I bought a MCE Toshiba Satellite P15-S479 nearly two years ago. For the first
6-9 months, I was able to watch and record TV in Media Center but all of
sudden started getting the same message ("Files needed to display videos are
missing or corrupt. Please restart or call Bill Gates") when i tried to watch
or record TV. After spending valuable time trying to figure out how to fix my
mistaken investment in this Microsoft software jalopy, I've tried these
remedies in order:
1. downloaded the diagnostic software to confirm all drivers are
'endorsed/supported by' microsoft
2. System restore
3. purchased and downloaded additional nVideo drivers
4. completely re-imaged my computer and re-installed the original software

unfortunately, i still get the same error message. i'll need to hang on to
this laptop for another year or two before i can justify crossing over to the
Mac world. In the meantime, is there anything else i should try to salvage my
mistaken investment in Microsoft software?

As I stated before you have to make sure that you have the latest MCE
drivers for your tuner card installed and not just the regular approved
Windows drivers. Also you must have an MCE compatible DVD Decoder.
Since you say you purchased additional NVIDIA drivers I assume you are
referring to the NVIDIA DVD Decoder which means the alert is referring to a
problem with your TV Tuner/Video capture card or its MCE drivers/

What do you mean you reinstalled just the drivers? What drivers did you
reinstall?

I get the same video error when I try and play live tv or even recorded .wmv
files. And I'm wondering about a solution.

I have the hauppage 150 pvr, a 3ghz p4 on an Asus board with integrated
graphics card and 1 gb of RAM.

the odd thing is that I can watch live tv or stored .wmv when using the xbox
as a media extender, so the hardware is working.
