Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>security_admin (more info?)

We have a 2003 domain and XP clients (SR2). We are attempting to use policies
to secure the desktops. We have a group of desktops that (though we have
shortcuts in the all user desktop folder) do not get their icons when they
login. However, if we login as the local desktop admin the shortcuts are
there. Could we have a selection in the profiles that are stopping the icons'
at login? If so, where should we be looking? When logged into the domain as
the user we can navigate to the all user desktop and execute the
shortcuts...they just don't appear.

Any help is appreciated! -T

Weird. Does it happen to a local user that is not a local administrator? If
it does not that would indicate a user configuration Group Policy setting
and you can run rsop.msc on the domain computer to see what Group Policy
settings are being applied to the computer/user. Does it work if the domain
user is added to the local administrators group on the domain computer?

I can log in to a local account (power user configuration) and the all user
icons appear. However, when I login via a domain user account management with
a policy no "all user" icons appear. As the account is managed through a
policy I have reviewed the policy settings but I can't figure out where in
the policies a setting would block the "all user" icons from appearing. Your
help is appreciated!

Running rsop.msc on that computer for the user account could help you
determine what is going on if it is Group Policy related. In particular look
for any setting under user configuration/administrative templates/Windows
components/desktop. You also could try to temporarily disable user
configuration in Group Policies that apply to the user in order to narrow it
down to specific GPO or temporarily move a user out of the scope of
influence of a Group Policy. Offhand I can't think of a specific related
setting. I would also verify that the problem does not happen when a local
user that is only a member of the uses group does not have the problem. If
you can not sort it out you may also want to post in the Group Policy
newsgroup.

My problem is that no desktop appears when I click on "limited" or "guest"
account. The screen just goes back to "Welcome". Any ideas?
