Hi, I right-clicked a small picture on a web page thinking it was a shortcut
link for my desktop. It wasn't.
Although it sent the picture to the desktop, it isn't an icon, a link, or
anything (except in the way), and I cannot remove it.
I did a search from the start menu for any files with the picture's name in
them, and deleted them; I've also changed the background to my desktop, but
it's still there.
I would be very grateful if anyone has any suggestions on how I can remove
this picture.
I am using Windows XP with service pack 2.
Many Thanks. >> Stay informed about: Unwanted desktop icon?? |

Hi
Try running the following programs to check for any spyware that may be on
your system:
Spybot - http://www.safer-networking.org/
CWShredder - http://forum.aumha.org/downloads/cwshredder.zip
Ad-Aware - www.lavasoftusa.com
Spy Sweeper - www.webroot.com
Try SpyWareBlaster to stop intrusions:
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
Also see the following links:
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
Have you also virus-checked your system with the latest definitions for your
AV program?

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
I do regular scans with Adaware & Spybot, and I also use Panda's online scan
(from the shortcut on my desktop). I was trying to improve my detection &
protection when this happened.
I had just run the online scan from Trend Micro for the first time, and
wanted to save a shortcut on my desktop for future use. On their homepage
there is a picture link to the scan, and that is what I right-clicked on and
sent to my desktop.

Hi
See if the link is in the Desktop folder - from a command prompt. If it is,
try deleting it from there.

Hello again.
There was something relating to it in the desktop folder so I deleted it -
but the small picture is still on my desktop.
Actually, there are two pictures, because I did it with the Trend Micro
CWShredder logo aswell (like a wally!).
Thanks

This sounds a bit like a problem I ran into a while back. One of my users
had unknowingly set a web page to display as her desktop. Which ultimately
just proved to "be in the way".
If your problem is the same, here's how to fix it.
1. Open Contral Panel
2. Select "Display"
3. Select the "Desktop" tab
4. Click the "Customize Desktop" button
5. Select the "Web" tab
6. Remove any checkboxes from the listed web pages.
7. Click OK
8. Click OK
Hope that helps.

And Voilà ! They're gone.
A great many thanks, Elkar; that was exactly the problem.
Many thanks to Will Denny, too, for his suggestions.
Until my next blunder,
Kind Regards,
