Post subject: USB Hard Drive Not Recognized

I am running a home built system (specs in signature). I recently purchased an enclsoure for a Seagate 200 meg HD. I put the new hard drive into the new enclosure, made the connections, and connected it to my computer via the provided USB cord. When I power the unit up, I get the USB icon in my task bar indicating that it recognizes there is a device there. However, when I go into Windows Explorer, it's not listed as a drive letter. I unplugged it and plugged it into several other USB ports on my computer, but get the same results. I went into device manager and tried to add new hardware, but that did not work. I walked through Windows troubleshooting guide, but that did not work. So my computer recognizes that something is there, but it never assigns it a drive letter in Windows. The drive has never been formatted. Could this be the problem? Any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Jim

you must partition the disk first. go to my computer, manage
select disk managaement and select the disk
you can then create partions and format them.

Thanks. You are right. What I actually did is temporarily contect it to my system, then ran the manufacturer's setup utility. That tool a lot less time than Windows formatting. Anyway, I poped it back into the external enclosure and it now works fine.

Thanks for the reply.
