USB Flash Drives

Is the flash drive formatted? If it is not it will not show up in Windows
Explorer at all.

I can access, format, and move files to this drive from the command prompt.
It still won't show in Windows Explorer however.

How come my flash drive won't show up in one windows xp pro computer,
when at another it will show up with drive letter b (i assigned it) and
on another it will show up as I, and yet another at E. Why?

Tom, are you sure? When you plug in a USB Flash Drive it should
automatically appear as a new drive in "Explorer" without any other
action on your behalf. I know I've missed it a couple of times myself.
Sorry to ask the dumb question, but sometimes it needs to be asked.

Have you tried another USB socket? Again, sorry about asking the
obvious. Have you tried it in someone else's machine?

By the way, these sticks usually come pre-formatted.

I hadn't tried it in another socket so I tried that after your email. It
still doesn't show up. The system finds it from applications if I force the
S: drive designation. I just can't get Windows Explorer to show it.

I have had flash drive. that I used before automatically show up in the My
Computer window. I have 2 other USB flash drives that are working properly,
but put another one in, and it is a San Disk 512 M. It shows up in My
Computer as drive P, but has no information on it, and is not accessible. I
have seen where you are supposed to use a file called usbXXXX.sys with flash
drives, but this drive doesn't have that file shown as part of the driver
package. Why can't Windows XP Pro determine that a device is a USB flash
drive and not some other sort of Storage. I seems to think that this device
is a CD drive. Right now, the new USB Flash drive is sitting there as drive
P, but can't seem to do anything with it. Any ideas of how to move ahead to
be able to use this drive that I got as a Christmas Present!!!!

I've got the same issue with 2 client computers. I can see the drive both in
the device manager and in disk management (drive letter is already assigned).

I can open the drive in a cmd prompt and even use diskpart to see it.
Stranger still is that by using the "explorer e:\" command, I do get an
explorer window with the drive contents. However it still does not show in
'My Computer" and I can't get to it by typing the drive letter in an Explorer
address bar.

I've tried every combination of uninstalling/reinstalling USB roots/hubs and
devices to no avail. The drive works fine in other computers and I'm
stumped. Any help would be awesome.

A final note: the drive does show up in the Control Panel under 'Portable

I'm not sure how this is done within Windows, I used a program called
TweakUI. All I had to do was put a check in the box next to available drive
letters. Before I got the Flash drives, all I had checked for display were
my floppy, hard drives, and removeables. So all that displayed were
A,C,D,E,& F. I checked the boxes next to the appropriate number of drives
and now they all display in My Computer.

Thanks, but I've tried that, too. Any other suggestions, I'll take any at
this point. Autoplay is also enabled for the drive.

My San Disk 512 Meg Cruiser drive still doesn't want to be recognized in my
computer even though two other flash drives do. The San Disk flash drive
works in a friends dell windows 2000 computer besides her dell Windows XP
computer. Both of them are Laptops. The Windows XP computer is updated to the
latest revison level as is my HP that accept the drive, and assigns it a
drive letter, in fact two drive letters, one being a CD drive, and on a
storage drive. I don't really need for this drive to work, but it is annoying
to have this kind of problem. I shows that Microsoft after almost 5 years
doesn't really have the handle on flash drives being used in a Windows XP
computer. Too bad they don't let us tell the computer what kind of drive it
is so that it can handle it properly.

I am trying to download some PowerPoint files on to a new flash drive. I
plugged it into the side of my laptop (Compaq Presario) and thought I loaded
the files into the drive that says Presario and what appears to be a picture
of the flash drive next to it. It is my understanding that when the files
are loading on the flash drive that it s suppose to light up and flash until
everything is complete. When I took the flash drive to my local print shop
they said there was nothing on it.
Now, I am home looking in my directory to see what I did wrong. There are
the same drive letters as before and I am confused. Please advise.
