Post subject: Start up problem in Windows XP need help

Ok so recently for whatever reason my computer is now in a never ending loop of restarting itself....it will get to the windows logo screen with the blue bar but then a b.s.o.d will flash and it will restart again. I have already read several similar problems and have seen a lot of suggestions to do a repair install. Will this work? Will any files that i would want to keep be harmed? Also if this is an option if it doesn't work what else can i do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
