If there are several suitable programs (Windows media player, Roxio etc)
installed on a PC, how do you define which one is actually used to generate
the TV picture feed when watching TV on Windows media centre? I ask because I
had installed a TV tuner card with associated software, and Media centre did
not use that software when TV live view was selected.

MC does not use any vendors TV application software. IMCgets the encoded
video directly from the tuner card and stores it on disk and then uses a MCE
compatible DVD decoder to decode and send the video to your graphics card
driver.

Thank you for your response. I had an un-registered version of Roxio 'Easy
Media Creator' installed on my PC and when I selected 'Live TV' on Windows
Media Centre I got a message requesting that I register the Roxio and No TV
picture was displayed. I was however able to play DVDs and watch TV directly
using each respective device's supplied software. It seems that engaging
Windows Media Centre 'Live TV' some how called upon action from the Roxio
Easy Media Creator software. After registering the Roxio everything worked
fine. Can this be explained?

Thank you for your reply. The reason that I ask my question is that I had an
unregistered version of Roxio 'Easy Media Creator' installed on my PC and
when engaging 'Live TV' through Windows media Centre, I got no picture and an
error message asking me to register the Roxio software. After registering
Roxio all worked fine.
I was able to Watch live TV using the software supplied with the TV card but
not via media centre. Can this be explained? many thanks.

Roxion
probably changed the default DVD Decoder that MCE was using and it would
not work properly with a program other then Roxio until it was registered.

Is there a way to define what the default decoder software actually is (if
there is more than one installed)?

Go to Microsoft.com and search for "decoder check" - it'll point you to a
piece of software that can determine which decoders you have installed and
which are MCE compatible, and you can select the preferred one...
Dana Cline - MCE MVP

Did you to find a way to change the default decoder. I have hit a problem
with the Cineplayer decoder deposited by Roxio emc8 on my system and have
been unable to get WMP to use the Power DVD decoder that it used with out
problems prior to installing EMC8. The cineplayer decoder refuses to pass AC3
dolby (allthough it will pass DTS) to the SPDIF ouput. I have used the MS
decoder check utility set to Power DVD as prefered, however WMP still has
cineplayer as default. Any ideas?
