Newbie here. Am trying to burn the 2hr American Idol show from last night
that I successfully recorded in MC at 'best' quality.

I use "More Programs>Create CD/DVC>Video DVD>Enter Title>Recorded TV>(choose
the show)>...and a window pops up that reads "you have selected more content
than will fit on the CD/DVD. Would you like the quality of the content to be
lowered so that it fits?"

Well, not really, but I click "OK" anyway. The next window that pops up
says that the DVD is full (it isn't) and that there is not enough room on it
and to select fewer files. Well, the show is just one file...what do I do?
Would a double-layer dvd help? Can I segment the show somehow?

I'd like to preserve shows at their best quality. Thanks for any input.

It isn't much help, but it does work for me - it successfully compresses files.

So I guess it was me, I'd:-
Try another disk
Try another disk type
Try Nero Vision Express to see if that can compress it

Sorry I can't be much help.

Here's what I would do:

Download and install a free program called dCut (available at
www.mcesoft.nl). Use dCut to remove all the commercials which will reduce the
length of your program by at least 20 minutes. dCut is really easy to use,
this should only take you about 15 minutes. Another good feature of the
program is that it works right within the MCE interface (it's stored under
"More Programs").

Then try burning your DVD again. If it is still too large a file, go back to
dCut and simply divide the program into two segments and burn to two DVDs.

I do this all the time with excellent results. Hope this helps.

I've seen comments about difficulty getting this to work, but you have so
consistenty recommended it, so I guess I must give it a try.

You seem to choose not to use it to compress the file - is that because you
don't like the result?

If it does compress it, is that done in background? Can I put the PC in
standby or turn it off and it will continue to do it whenever the PC is
switched on?

If I manage to get the program down to a size that will fit onto a single
DVD, how long does it take to actually burn it to a DVD, to be played on a
standard DVD player? (I guess it can't do that in background too, resilient
to the rest of the family turning the PC off?)

Cheers

dCut offers to compress the file when choosing options and outputs a .wmv
file that is significantly smaller than the original .dvr-ms file. I usually
use Nero to burn the DVD because it is faster, give you more flexibility in
setting up menus and more reliable than the burn engine within MCE.

FYI, I haven't found that the quality of the video is significantly worse
using this method than trying to burn directly from the .dvr-ms file.

There seems to be a limitation in MCE, only allowing burning of shows between
1 and 2 hours. I can always burn a one hour show plus or minus a few minutes,
but I cannot burn two hour shows. A one-hour show like LOST takes about 30
minutes to burn on my AMD Athlon X2 4200+ (dual-core). Don't let the progress
bar fool you. It stays at 1% for like 5-15 minutes, then goes to 2%, then all
of a sudden jumps to 40%, etc.

I read a post somewhere that said: "Why wont a 3GB DVR-MS fit on a 4.3GB
DVD-Video? The Sonic DVD encoder converts the audio to Linear PCM which takes
up far more space than the MPEG-1 Layer 2 (MP2 or Musicam) audio in the
DVR-MS file."

Yeah, it blows MCE won't do two hours. Heck it should do 3-4 at lower
quality. Maybe Microsoft opted for speed. Think about all the users out there
whose Pentium III machines take 5 hours just to burn a 1 hour episode. I
think with the dual-core revolution Windows Vista Media Center will be able
to relax many of restrictions.

I get the same series of error messages despite trying to record a programme
length of ONE MINUTE !

I chose one minute to test what was going on as i had my suspicions that
something wasn't right.

Anyone any further ideas as to the nature of the problem. I've tried various
discs as well.

Media Center won't burn a one minute recording? What a shame. Try visiting
Windows Update to download the latest Media Center updates. I have since
upgraded to Windows Vista Home Premium which seems to have fixed many of the
DVD burning bugs of the past. However, just before upgrading I recall a
Windows Media Center update fixing some burning issues at which point I had
more success burning. Good luck.
