"Remove Hardware Safely" on Bottom taskbar

First, be aware that the Windows XP task bar has a "Notification Area"
where it usually displays the time and icons for SOME running
applications (as determined by the APPLICATION'S developers). It also
has the OPTION to include a QuickLAUNCH area/toolbar for some
application shortcuts.

A "Remove Hardware Safely" icon in the notification area is usually the
result of a removable storage device being attached to the computer.
These MAY include USB flash drives, external hard drives attached to a
USB or Firewire port, a digital camera or an adapter for digital camera
memory chips. Use of the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon directs the
computer that you wish to detach the removeable storage device and that
it should complete the process of writing any information on that
device. IF the device is detached while the computer has not completed
the process of writing data to it some of the VITAL indexing areas in
the storage device could be corrupted and ALL OF THE DATA on the device
COULD be lost.

For any "Notification Area" applications you don't wish to start when
your computer is started open their window and look for "Options" or
"Preferences" in their menu system. These items might be on the
application's "Tools", "View" or even "Edit" menu. Once the "Options" or
"Preferences" pop-up is displayed look for check boxes or option buttons
for things to de-select like "Launch MP3 player when Windows starts". If
you are able to determine that the player doesn't offer these options
you may have to select "Run..." after clicking the task bar's "Start"
button and type "MSCONFIG" in the resulting pop-up. On the "System
Configuration" pop-up's "Start Up" tab you will be able to de-select
unwanted startup applications, BUT be aware that a few applications will
re-establish themselves on that list if you don't utilize the preference
settings withing the application itself.

Note that some anti-virus applications will launch instant messenger
applications IF the anti-virus is set to scan instant messages. If you
anti-virus is set up this way you might not be able to close the instant
messenger application without shutting down your operating system.
