Post subject: Problems with disk partition software (maybe)

This could be just a case of me not understanding what the rules are:

I have a 200Gb drive that is partitioned as drives 'C' through 'H' with 'C' being the primary and the rest being logical drives in the extended partition. All the drives have approximately the same amount of space, except 'H', which is slightly larger just because it got all that was left over when I did the original partition.

I needed some additional space on 'C' to allow DisKeeper to do its job better, and I used Partition Magic 7 to remove some space from 'H' (15Gb) to give to 'C'. I did both things in one step, and now think I should have done it in separate steps. What I got was no change in 'C', and a damaged partition in 'H' which renders it unusable. The unusable part is OK, since I had cleared the drive completely before I started. I can now just junk the drive, add the space to 'C', and then repartition 'H'.

My problem is, I'm more than a little gunshy now. Can I do what I want without having to fear also losing 'C'? I'm thoroughly backed up (Retrospect runs weekly for all files/folders/drives, and I can run an incremental before I start), so I could always restore everything, but I really don't want to go through the hassle. Of course, is there another choice?

What you have to realize is that any space left from shrinking the H: drive will be left beside the H: drive, at least graphically in PMagic.

Once freed up, you will have to slide all of the other partitions over until the empty space is becide C: and then stretch C: to fill the space.

Not fun and it takes a long time, but it should work.

Oh, boy!! Did I see that coming??? I just didn't want to think about it. It makes sense, but I was thinking about the fact 'C' and 'H' are really in two different partitions. 'C' in the primary, and 'H' in the extended. I figured if the space were anywhere in the extended, it would be OK. So... I may be at this a couple of days, but I'll do what you suggest.

Thanks for the post.
