Post subject: Problem with services on XP Pro

I have a laptop that was cleared of viruses and spyware a month ago but a problem has started occuring where nothing appears in the network connections folder and no printers appear in the printers folder.
When i check the services there are only 9 running.
I am starting in Normal mode, but it looks like the services that are starting are the ones that would start in safe mode.
I cleared the Application Event log and restarted and thses are the errors appearing:

Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is driving me mad

Code:
These Windows services are started:

   Cryptographic Services
   DCOM Server Process Launcher
   Event Log
   Help and Support
   Logical Disk Manager
   Plug and Play
   Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
   System Restore Service
   Windows Management Instrumentation

The command completed successfully.

So even in Normal Mode you get these "safe mode" errors in the Event Log? Try running the system file checker to make sure all your system files are ok:

Go to Start->Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit OK. Let it scan. If it finds any files missing/corrupted, it may ask for the Windows CD.
