Post subject: Prey and FEAR do not work due to KB917422 security update

I've had a problem with the KB917422 update which came out Tuesday 8th
august, as have quite a few other game players. Not sure if this is the right
place to post about this error, but after the installation of KB917422, the
games FEAR and prey immediately show application errors upon running them.
This only occured after tuesdays release of patches, when just KB917422 is
uninstalled then the games work fine, then install it again, they dont. I and
quite a few others are left with the dilemma of either leaving the KB917422
patch uninstalled and risking security issues such as possible remote code
execution, so that we can play these games; or installing KB917422 and not
being able to play. I have failed so far to find anything about this in the
Microsoft Windows knowledge base section. I hope a fix will be found soon.

If anyone else is experiencing this problem with the games i have mentioned,
or any others, could they let me know. Could they get in touch especially if
they know anymore about this issue, as i am quite in the dark at the moment.
I am not sure if microsoft are aware of the problem, and cannot find any way
of reporting the bug on the site Sad Should anyone know how i can report this
bug then again, please reply.

Hi, Fear is running fine here after all the updates. Perhaps you need to
comare hardware/drivers as this might be specific to a certain setup. Here
is mine:
Asus A8R32-MVP Deluxe
AMD64 3500+ Winchester
XPSP2

SOLUTION:

Many people blame windows, kaspersky antivirus whatever.
The solution to your problems is in the last post on this thread: http://forums.vugames.com/thread.jspa?threadID=29077&start=60&tstart=0

turn it on & the game refuses to run, turn it off and the game runs perfectly. The problem is how do you turn it off to run the game, then turn it back on again when you need to use it. I used a tool called "MMCompView", It lists all the CODECS installed on your system & allows you to enable or disable individual codecs. here's a link ... http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/mmview.html



Download that application, disable that codec and all should work.


PS. I know it's an old thread, but it is still a problem eople face.
