Can I remove partitions with no problem using XP's Computer Management, or
would I be further ahead to use Symantec Partition Magic? What about
creating partitions? I do not want to loose my C: drive as I do not plan to
reinstall the OS. Thanks, Bill

Depends on if you want to create/delete partitions only, or if you want to
"resize" existing partitions. You can easily create/delete/manage by
right-clicking on My Computer, selecting Manage. Once the window comes up,
select Disk Management in the tree at the left. You'll see all your drives
and their partitions on the right side.

If your C: is all one huge partitions, you'll want something like Partition
Magic to shrink it so you can create more partitions.

The laptop this is coming from has only a 20Gb HDD that is presently
partitioned into two halves. I can managed to delete the second partition
with the Win XP disc management tools but not then resize the C partition to
make use of the other space. Should I be able to or do I still need a
partition manager?

thanks
Richard
PS
I've backed all the data up but nothing of the system

Firstly I've partially answered my own question from a reply further down the
list.
Secondly I'm having such grief from the partition manager saying that volume
C is in use that I've deleated it for the present

What is involved in doing the destructive version of reformat given that
I've just had a brand new 400Gb hard drive that's just waiting for something
to put on it. Can I just copy the whole of the c drive, re format with 2
unequal partitions and then paste everything back
