Hi Everyone.
I'm new to this newsgroup, and I'm hoping to get some assistance.
I bought an HP Pavillion zd8000 that came with Windows XP, Media
Center Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 2. It came with a CD/DVD
recorder/player. It also came with an external HP Dual TV Tuner,
Digital Video Recorder. I hooked everything up, but haven't tried to
watch TV or record TV. That doesn't interest me just yet.
Instead, I tried to record a video that I played on Line 1 of my TV's
built in VCR. I also tried to record a DVD that played on Line 2 of my
TV. I'm getting the impression that the only thing that Media Center
Edition is going to record is a TV signal. Is that correct, or is
there some other way I can record a VCR/DVD signal?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you in advance. >> Stay informed about: My First Newbie Question, So Please Help |

It can be done, but it is kind of quirky in the process. Essentially what
you do is set up a 'manual record' time for channel 3 and then play your DVD
or VHS into channel 3 and have the MCE catch the input that way.

MCE isn't set up to record outside TV.
Don't know the hardware in the PC, but there could/should be other
included software to allow the TV Capture board to capture video.
There should be a S-Video (possibly composite video) input on the back
of the card. MCE compliant capture boards have built in hardware MPEG
encoding. You should be able to make an analog MPEG from any analog
souce you attach. All outside of MCE of course. >> Stay informed about: My First Newbie Question, So Please Help |

Ok. Thanks, but I need a lot more control over what exactly is being
captured.

You can use Windows Movie Maker 2 which should be installed on the PC, hook
the VCR up to your tuner/ capture card and then pick to record from that
under Capture Video. You probably wont hear sound when you do that but you
will when you play back the video. This is what I do and it works great.
Note though that you will most likely NOT be able to record from copyrighted
VHS and DVD. However this will give you much control over what you record
and want to edit out of the recording. I use it to transfer old copied VHS
shows and stuff to the PC or to be able to watch on DVD since there is only
one VCR in the house, and its hooked up to the PC!
