Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windows>mediacenter (more info?)

I'm having the same installation problem several others have reported but
loading Disc 1 doesn’t help. I get to a certain place in the installation of
Windows Media Center 2005 and can’t go any further. I’m trying to install the
OS onto a computer I have just built, of course. The error message I'm
getting is "One of the components that Windows needs to continue set up could
not be installed. Data Error (cyclic redundancy check)." The System Setup Log
indicated: "Error: Installation failed: D:\1386\asms. Error message: Data
error (cyclic redundancy check)." I’m also getting the error message "The
file 'asms' on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 CD is needed." I
started out with Disc 1 and was still on Disc 1 when the error messages
started. Then I tried Disc 2, the Update disc that came with the first two,
and a disc I downloaded with SP2 on it, in that order. I kept getting the
same messages. The Microsoft support site has instructions to use Regedit.exe
and also to look for the “C:\$win_nt$.~ls” folder on the installation CD
using Recovery Console. Windows (or the part that is accessible to me) could
not access Regedit.exe and I have not been able to figure out how to work the
commands in the Recovery Console. I’m going to take another look at the
instructions for Recovery Console. I’d like to see if 1386 or this other
folder is on one of my installation CD’s. Does anyone have any other idea
what may be going on? Thanks for any thoughts.

Actually it is MCE disk 1 which is Windows XP Professional SP2. This is the disk that you boot from
to start the installation.
