On the Media Center start page, as soon as the mouse pointer touches "My
Pictures", a crash report is generated and then Media Center shuts down.
Here is the info in the "C:\Windows\eHome\ehshell.crash" file
Unhandled Exception - 3/4/2005 8:20:25 PM
Message: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
Exception:
System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an

This sounds like a corrupted install. Did you purchase this machine from an
OEM or build it yourself? Also have you installed all the "critical"
updates from WIndows Update?

Bought this hp m280n computer new which had MCE 2004 preinstalled. Got the
MCE 2005 update from hp and installed it 3 months ago. Worked great until
last week. Installed critical update KB887742 just prior to problem
occuring. Uninstalled the critical update which did not fix problem so I
reinstalled the critical update. Contacted hp - their suggestion was to do a
non-destructive restore which I do not want to do as I have installed a lot
of software since buying computer.

The times I've seen this seem to be corruption in the .NET assemblies.
Download and install the latest .NET framework...

Reinstalled .NET Framework version 1.1 and Service Pack 1. This did not fix
the problem.

Hmmm...in that case I have no suggestions other than perhaps updating your

Greg, the real problem here is that nobody has a real answer. I have the
same problem and from what I've seen at thegreenbutton.com, this problem
originates from registry cleaner apps. What we need here is the registry key
or keys that were deleted. If anybody knows more about this issue, please
post here. Reinstalling the OS is NEVER a fix, just a guaranteed way to make
something work without knowing what was wrong. It's the way to fix things if
you don't know what you are doing. With XP, there is always a way to fix it.
We need a reply from somebody with real experience. Lots of the MVPs on
here are a joke.

Found It!
Open registry editor and go to the following string:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\MRU\PicturesMRU
change the value of "Sort String" to 0
Somebody who is having this problem, please post here if this fix works for
you.

Just so somebody with an "MVP" designation doesn't try to do this first, let
me explain what happened so you can avoid this problem in the future.
In Media Center 2005, when you select Pictures, TV, etc... there's the
little menu animation that shows you your most recent used items, or MRUs.
Most registry "cleaners" and other programs like Ad-Aware will remove these
entries from the registry. In most instances this is benign but in this
specific instance, that little menu animation calls entries in the MRU of My
Pictures to display the pictures. The MRUs are indexed as "MRU #0, MRU #1,
MRU #2 and so on. The value I had you change is what media center calls to
look for what files is should put in that menu animation. Since the registry
"cleaning" program removed the MRUs, media center looks at a value in the
registry that no longer exists, and crashes.
Solution: Don't run registry cleaning programs. They aren't aware of Media
Center specific registry keys.

Thanks Nate, I tried your idea and it did not worked at first. However, it
gave me another idea and it worked! Like everyone my MCE crashed when I
selected "My pictures". However, if I created another account or boot up in
safe mode, I had no problem with "My pictures". Using your idea I created an
account, copied the "MRU" string form the new account and pasted it into my
old account. Voila! Like you said I have use registry cleaner and more then
likely deleted the "MRUs" values. Thanks to all you for helping all of us.

I wouldn't call myself technical but I believe I followed this discussion.
Just to confirm, the problem with MCE was NOT from update KB887742...correct?
I crashed twice & got this error message & wanted to check out the feedback
before I downloaded the fix. (I learned from installing Service Pack 2 that
I can't just download everything it tells me to. Crashed two machines that
way so now I'm trying to be a more educated consumer. It's not always easy
for the "average" user though so thanks to everyone for bearing with me!)
