Post subject: Lost Windows System Sounds

I'm having trouble getting back my "Windows Sounds". I'm running WinXP Home w/SP2. My sound card is a Creative SB Live!. I have audio when playing CD's , DVD's, Windows Media Player, and Real Player. I don't get the audio, but I DO get video from media files on news web sites. When I open Sounds and Audio Devices, and go to the sounds tab, the scheme is Windows Default, but when I click on one of the events, I find that the "Play" button is grayed out. I'm not sure as to when this all happened, I can only guess that it must have been an update to Windows.

Any suggestions short of a re-install. Systems Restore doesn't fix the problem, so now I'm lost

Thanks

Hello,

It sounds like some sort of problem with the codec which decodes PCM-encoded .WAV files. Have you tried reinstalling the device drivers for the Creative Lab's SoundBlaster Live! sound card? If so, did that make any difference?

Regards,
