Post subject: Laptop does not start up - blank screen, no errors

I have a problem which I dont understand:

When I press the power button on my laptop, the power light comes on, and the hard disk light flashes for a second.

Then absolutely nothing.

No 'Windows starting' message, not nothing.

I have experience hard disk crashes before, but normally at least the PC tries to boot from the hard disk and then displays some message, but at present I just get a silent PC and blank screen!

The only way to turn the laptop off is to keep the power button pressed for a few seconds (which used to work earlier if the PC hanged).

The Laptop is an HP Pavilion zt3000, 768 Mb RAM, 40 GB disk, running Win XP Home, bought in Jan '04, and out of warranty.

Can anyone suggest what I can do to diagnose/fix this?

Thanks in advance.

Black screen could mean the following (depending on the motherboard):

Broken CPU (if one present)
Broken RAM (again if present)
Broken graphics card (again, if present)
Broken LCD screen (try pluging it into another VGA RGA monitor if it has anothero out put)
Broken motherborad

This problem is most certialy a hardware problem, if you are not computer technicly litirate, it would probably be best if you 'shop around' for some one/where (most likly a smaller computer shop) that will fix your laptop.

Hmm... Does not sound good.

Though if it is the problems listed in your reply, then probably the hard disk would be unaffected right?

How does one connect a laptop hard drive onto a different PC...? Is it a complex task ? ( I am very competent with PCs, but not so much on the internal type of stuff!)

THe hard drive is probly not at fault, if it were I would except the laptop to either hang detecting the laptop or display no hard drive at all. There are quite cheap adapters for using a laptop hard drive with a normal motherboard.

Augh! I have exactly the same problem. I guess it's slightly good to hear that someone else is having the same one.

My symptoms are identical to what you're reporting. I've got a custom zt3000 w/ these details on the service tag:

Pavilion zt3000
p/n: DL812AV

512 MB of RAM, I think the 1.5 GHz processor.

I also assume that it's a problem with something critical like the motherboard. I've been searching the web a bit and did find this sale on eBay of a faulty motherboard from our model of computer. The seller reports the same basic symptoms and claims that it can be fixed by replacing a couple of display chips. I don't know if that would solve our problem or if we could even find these chips:

http://cgi.ebay.com/FAULTY-HP-Pavilion-ZT3000-Motherboard-Spares-Repair_W0QQitemZ6881700698QQcategoryZ51162QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem (eBay auction for faulty mobo)

So anyway, I'm trying to decide whether to have some place like Geek Squad fix it under some sort of flat rated deal, or trying to snag a motherboard on eBay for cheap and swapping it out myself. I've plenty of experience with PCs (assembling them myself, etc.), but basically none with notebooks.

What did you decide to do with yours?

No beep codes at all?

Does the laptop stay powered on then (according to what you said, it sounds like it's still on, just no image)? Try connecting it to a monitor like Sparda mentioned earlier to make sure it's not the LCD issue.

I highly doubt it's the hard drive. You should still be able to get into the POST saying boot volume not found or something similar to that. Motherboard, cpu or LCD...

tgice, that motherboard doesn't look so good (look at the bottom picture). Looks like it's been soldered maybe or it was burnt somehow.

How much does the Geek Squad charge? Was trying to look at the prices at Best Buy last time....but was distracted.
