Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>help_and_support (more info?)

Suddenly, all the text sizes have gotten smaller in all applications. All the
menu bars, command line buttons, the text I type in Outlook - everything is
smaller. The font shows Arial 10, but it smaller like 8 or 9. Also, the text
I am typing looks lighter than before.

My desktop icons seem smaller and same with the taskbar icons at the bottom.

In Excel, the cell size is smaller and more columns and rows are displayed.
Again, all data is smaller and lighter in appearance.

In Word, the text is smaller than the font size shown in the font command
line above. It shows font size 10, but I know it is smaller than that.

I’ve tried changing the Display setting in Control Panel, but that doesn’t
seem to change anything. I’ve had this happen in the past, but don’t
remember the fix.

Anything you can suggest?

Did you try going tp "View", then "Text Size" and see where the check is?
Perhaps make sure it is on "medium"

if that doesn't work, try holding down your CTRL key then rolling that wheel
between your left and right buttons on your mouse...

Thanks Chris. Your suggestion just effects Internet Explorer. My problem is
that all applications are affected and I need a global solution. (Text size
'Medium' was checked and so I changed it to Larger which is a partial
solution).

The same thing happened to me. I had previously turned off the
automatic updates, but recently had installed a new virus program, that
I believe turned them on again without my knowledge. And yes, I am
pretty savvy when it comes to most computer configurations. Anyway, I
just restored to the day before and then turned off the updates. All
was fine. I guess I was tired of trying to change the display
properties and forgot about the resolution which would have also fixed
the problem. FYI, this happened to quite a few of us about a year ago
at work also, and even out tech guy was dumbfounded by it. Those auto
updates are really dangerous. I just check periodically and choose
which ones I want.

I thought my problem might be due to the same reason (in my case, all the
fonts have suddenly become larger in dialog boxes, and some boxes do not show
all their contents).

I started a new thread on this on 28th April 06 entitled Graphics
Properties... because this is one of the dialog boxes that's missing some
content, but no replies as yet. (this is the message: I'm using Windows XP
Home Edition, SP2 on a newish Toshiba laptop. The following problem has only
just occurred. When I right-hand mouse click on the desktop, go to graphics
options on the pop-up menu, then choose graphics properties, there is
incomplete information displayed on each tab of the dialog box entitled
'Intel (R) 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics Controller Properties'. It's as if
the right-hand side and bottom of the box have been chopped off. Also the
size of the text within the box is larger than before.)

I've tried all the solutions suggested in this thread but no solution yet.
I'm not sure if it's connected with an update as it's suddenly happened, but
have checked the info with each update and the bulletins don't mention this
problem. I did uninstall the update mentioned here as the culprit but it
hasn't solved the problem.

The only other possible cause is that I recently looked at the Control
Panel's accessibility settings and chose high contrast, but didn't like the
result, so returned to the original settings (Windows standard), and wonder
if that is the root of the problem ie that somehow I have not got the
original settings back.

Any more ideas out there?

Alec

Well it could just be the resolution or the DPI settings in the display
adapter. Try putting Normal size (96 DPI). And try a low resolution
while you are fixing this.
This is the only way i thought of.
(at least try and send results to simzon.RemoveThis@internet.is

Thanks but no - no use. Wish it was so simple. I am more convinced that is
connected with the high contrast setting on the accessibility/display setting
- although after selecting it, I then unticked it to turn it off, I suspect
there is some sort of bug related to this action. Anyone know a fix, or
where to go to find one? Will have to phone Toshiba next for advice.

For a better idea of the problem, here's another example. On this forum,
there are three pane across the screen. The left-hand menu has 'normal' size
text. The centre panel with the postings has very large text so not much is
visible in the pane. The right-hand pane has tiny text. Message boxes that
come up have such small, italicised, incompletely formed text that it is
barely legible.

I have the text size set to smallest on the browser.

Another example is when typing an e-mail using Outlook Express - all the
headers (subject line, address line, menu etc) are in normal size text, but
the message I type is in large text.

The troubleshooter tab of the graphics properties dialog box has large text
and incomplete content.
Since this problem began, I have installed the latest BIOS and re-installed
the graphics controller software.

Every adjustment I make results in a worse situation. Soon I won't be able
to read anything.

Help!
