Try this.

Open Folder Options...
Start | Run | Type: control folders | Click OK |
File Types tab | Scroll down to and click on AVI in the Registered file
types list | Click the Advanced button | Click the Change Icon button |

Select an icon from the list below:
[[Shows which icon you are currently using. If other icons are available,
they appear in the list. To change to another icon, click a different one in
the list or type a new file in File name.]]

Browse button:
[[Click to browse through folders to find the file you want.]]

Change Icon button:
[[Click to change the icon that is associated with this file type.]]

Hope this helps. Let us know.

Only one problem....There's no "Advanced" button when I follow these
instructions. I can change the icon for any particular instance of such a
file, but not for all (ie the default).

We still talking AVI?

Is there a Restore button instead?

Yes, there is a restore button, but it restores to something I don't
particularly want. The use of .avi was really just an example. I was looking
for some general method of changing the default icon for a file type. I have
noticed that using regedit in a dodgy sort of way that it is possible to
change the "default" key value. This is fine, but I'd prefer a method that
doesn't use regedit!

OK. I'm with it now. Only thing is one point......you may have to
hei a button called "restore" to get to the "base" description before being
able to access the "advanced" button!

Thanks for your time and info.

The Restore button appears for a file type if that file type has been
somehow modified. I do not have a clue as to what the parameters are.
SWAG, you install a program that steals the default file associations.

Wesley - i think this is icon hi-jacking !!!

I am very curious too. I have had icons randomly change. In example, all
my .cfg files changed to a microsoft office outlook icon. How do I reverse
the take-over and go back to the previous icon association?? This drives me
crazy.

Wesley,
I have a similar problem. I installed Omni-Page OCR software which has
"highjacked" all my file types. It changed all the file types and icons of
any image file like .pdf or .jpg to OmniPage. It does not affect the
functionality once i change the "open with" default to the correct program
association. What i cannot do is change back the "file type" in a global
way. Any thoughts?
Thanks, Michael Sills

Why are you posting Vista problems in an XP newsgroup? Vista newsgroups
aren't that hard to find.
But, to answer your question, I don't know because I am running XP.
