Post subject: File Sharing Problem with Windows MCE PC
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windows>mediacenter (more info?)

Is there any reason why my MCE 2005 PC cannot see other PCs on my home
network with the MS home file sharing turned on?. The other PCs are running
Windows XP Home with service pack 2. And they can see and access my files
just fine. However under "My Network Places" on the MCE PC all I can see is
the shared folder for the MCE PC. I have disabled all firewalls on all the
PCs and re-run the set-up wizard numerous times on all the PCs to no avail.
They continue see me however I still cannot see them. Is there some type of
software incompatability with Windows XP Media Center Edition vs. XP Home
Edition that causes the one way file sharing problem or something?.

Any and all helpful suggestions are more than appreaciated;

Hollis

P.S. I can ping the other PCs as well. I just can't get their folder Icons
to appear in "My Network Places" nor does trying to map them help. It says it
cannot establish a network path. Again it has all the symtoms of a firewall
being in the way somehow, but as I said I've disabled all the ones I can find.

Odds are your other machines are in the MSHOME domain (default for XP Home)
and MCE is in the WORKGROUP domain (default for XP Pro/MCE). Also, make
sure you have your firewalls configured to allow local access.

I have found that in order to see another xp machine in a peer workgroup is
to have something shared and the allow network users to change my files
checked also (when sharing a folder).. then the computer will make its
presence known..

Yea I have done that. Same problem though in that I still cannot see the
other XP Home PCs shared folders. It is not a total loss however in that with
the "allow network users to change my files" checked I can still send and
receive files to others on my network by allowing them to place whatever
files they wish to send to the MCE PC in that one's shared folder my as a
modification of it's contents. So at least I got "half a loaf of the bread"
so to speak. But as I mentioned earlier for approx. $3000.00 from Dell, I
expected better.

You might also look at the settings for your firewall, particularly if
you're using a 3rd-party firewall such as Zone Alarm.

As I stated earlier. I have tried disabling all software firewalls (that I
know about) on all computers involoved in the workgroup. As this was the
first thing I suspected. Still no results. Only one folder icon appears (it's
own) under "My Network Places" on the MCE PC. Whereas all folder icons appear
on all the Windows XP Home PCs. A Dell Dimension 8200 DT and a Dell Inspiron
6000 notebook.

Thanks for the suggestion anyway however;

But if you drill down under the networks (Entire Network/Microsoft Windows
Network/...) do they show up under the PC's name?

make sure your Computer Browser, Workstation, DCOM Server, DHCP Client, DNS
Client, Net Logon, Network Connections, Remote Procedure Call, TCP/IP
Netbios Helper, and Server Services are started on that Dell, also make sure
they are all set to automatic.

In short answer "no". When I can see any of the PCs at all it is only the MCE
PC itself under "entire network". However after some reboots I can't can't
see any of the PCs including the MCE PC. For when I try and access "workgroup
computers" I get a rejection message from Windows that says "My workgroup (I
named "HOMEUSER")is not accessable", "Incorrect function", "You might not
have permission to use this resource. Contact
administrator.....blah,blah,blah, and so on. But then again as I said after
other system reboots I can access the list of my workgroup computers, but
only the MCE PC shows up as the only one listed. Go figure.

To recap. I can ping the other PCs just fine, so undoubtably their is
connectivity on that level. However their individual folder icons are a no
show while the MCE PC's are visable to the others. Again go figure.

Thanks for the info "Turbo [GEEK].

I went into "Computer Managment" and ran through your check list each time
after two reboots just to make sure that the settings remained. Some of the
properties we're set to "manual" and one, the "RPC" setting, needed to be
started and set to "automatic". So I was hopeful that this could be the
problem. However when I open My Network Places" well......much to my
disdain.....same problem Sad . Still only one stupid icon appears. The MCE
PC's own. One note though if it is any help. While the "Net Logon" function
does set to "automatic", it will not start. I get a Windows message that
suggest when a function like this it has nothing to do it will shutdown
automatically.

Again thanks for all the help on this issue so far people. Believe me it's
much appreciated. But this just appears to be one of those stubborn-ass
networking problems I guess that may never get resolved I realize now unless
maybe I try an entirely different protocol such as "NetBEUI" as has been
suggested by "HillBillyBuddist". As soon as I figure out how to install and
switch to such a protocol.

The only other thing I can think of...do all PCs have the same user names
with the same passwords? If not, that might account for it...

I'm late to this thread, but does it work with the Windows Firewall disabled
on all the machines? Any other firewalls? Configuration is a pain, but
don't resort to Netbios/Netbui. You can get this to work.

This is a similar problem with different symtoms and the resolution that
worked for me. I have a brand new Dell 310 with Media Center XP and I could
not even load the new computer with its own network address that should show
up in the "My Network Places", however it could see my main desk top computer
in the den as well as the Maxtor Share Storage device that is all hooked into
the Linksys router. It also could not see my laptop which was running by
wireless connectivity but I will mention that fix later.

I talked to Dell for about 1 1/2 hrs. in which they were very kind and tried
their best to work me through the issue but then needed to refer me to paid
support or web forum.

The one thing that I did try and worked for me was to change the "Computer"
Name when you are going through the Network Setup Wizard. I changed it from
the default one given during setup and made a new one, obeying the 15
character limit and no special characters. I also got rid of an apostrophe my
daughter put in the description (ie: Morgan's Computer - I don't know if
that had any bearing but the same change in another program corrected the
problem).

I completed the wizard and at the end of this attempt the computer said it
needed to restart, which had not happened on any of the other attempts at
setting up the network and file sharing. When it came back up and I went to
the Network Places the icon for the new Dell computer was there and I could
see the contents of the folder!!

I then went to the other 2 computers and refreshed the Network Places and
the Drive Icon for the new Dell was there also.

As I mentioned earlier I could not see my laptop in the Network Places on
the new computer and my way of fixing this issue was just to create the link
manually. I went to the Add a Network Place Wizard under Tasks in Network
Places and selected choose another network location. Then I just typed in the
address where it was located which info can be found on the computer that I
wanted to access and it was basically as follows //delllaptop/SharedDocs. It
actually started autofilling the information as I started typing. After the
Wizard was finished it created the drive icon and I was then able to access
the contents.

Hope this helps!

I have an almost identical problem with my home network. I read through all
these posts and none of the suggestions worked. However, I just upgraded the
Symantec Internet Security on the PC I was trying to gain access to and I am
now able to access shared files on the external USB drive attached to the PC.
I still cannot access the shared folder on the c: drive of the PC itself,
but I can access shared folders on the external USB drive.

It does not resolve our problem, but can be used as a workaround. Just
thought I'd pass it on...
