This is a similar problem with different symtoms and the resolution that
worked for me. I have a brand new Dell 310 with Media Center XP and I could
not even load the new computer with its own network address that should show
up in the "My Network Places", however it could see my main desk top computer
in the den as well as the Maxtor Share Storage device that is all hooked into
the Linksys router. It also could not see my laptop which was running by
wireless connectivity but I will mention that fix later.
I talked to Dell for about 1 1/2 hrs. in which they were very kind and tried
their best to work me through the issue but then needed to refer me to paid
support or web forum.
The one thing that I did try and worked for me was to change the "Computer"
Name when you are going through the Network Setup Wizard. I changed it from
the default one given during setup and made a new one, obeying the 15
character limit and no special characters. I also got rid of an apostrophe my
daughter put in the description (ie: Morgan's Computer - I don't know if
that had any bearing but the same change in another program corrected the
problem).
I completed the wizard and at the end of this attempt the computer said it
needed to restart, which had not happened on any of the other attempts at
setting up the network and file sharing. When it came back up and I went to
the Network Places the icon for the new Dell computer was there and I could
see the contents of the folder!!
I then went to the other 2 computers and refreshed the Network Places and
the Drive Icon for the new Dell was there also.
As I mentioned earlier I could not see my laptop in the Network Places on
the new computer and my way of fixing this issue was just to create the link
manually. I went to the Add a Network Place Wizard under Tasks in Network
Places and selected choose another network location. Then I just typed in the
address where it was located which info can be found on the computer that I
wanted to access and it was basically as follows //delllaptop/SharedDocs. It
actually started autofilling the information as I started typing. After the
Wizard was finished it created the drive icon and I was then able to access
the contents.
Hope this helps!
