Post subject: For Experts Only--explorer.exe problems

SOoo.....I am a very saavy XP user (for example I can use regedit, msconfig, know about half open connections etc etc) I also know all about spyware, adware, HJT logs, tweaking etc etc, but for some reason I am still having a problem with my system that I cant get to the bottom of! I am using XP SP2 with all updates (including those damn security updates, which I think might be the root of my problem, but you tell me)
The main problem is explorer.exe "crashing" though not in the usual sense. I am a manic F5 presser (I dont know where that came from) and also love the right click --> refresh... however, occasionally I will right click and the menu will be completely unusable...also, any open programs, like Firefox for example will, how can I explain this, "embed" themselves onto the explorer background when I try to close them, if that makes sense. I then have to use Ctrl-Alt-Delete or Ctrl-Shift-Esc (SIDE NOTE----whats the actual difference between those key combos???) to end and restart explorer.exe and then everything is back to normal for a couple hours, till it happens again. Any ideas anyone?? I read something about a recent security update causing problems with NVidia and certain 3rd party software (of which I have both and plenty) so maybe thats it, but I just installed a couple new security updates and MS did mention something about correcting the aforementioned problem with a new update, maybe they still havent, and thats my problem?? Anyway, whatever help or ideas will be greatly appreciated, stupid newb answers like "run a spyware check" etc etc will be ignored! (since I have done all that and my HJT log is immaculate and WinPatrol Plus looks good too!!!)

Something else just popped into my head....why is it that when I move a 2GB movie file (for example) to another folder and refresh while looking at the previous folder the file suddenly reappears and stays there (albeit unusable) until I restart?? Also an explorer problem? Or related??

Thanks a million!!

The diffrance between ctrl+alt+del and ctrl+shift+esc is that ctrl+alt+del will open the control alt delete menu and ctrl+shit+ecp opens task manager.

Might be a bad explorer extension, try disabling a few non-defult extensions with http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html (shexview).

okay....when I press ctrl-alt-del and ctrl-shft-esc. I see the same thing! Maybe a more **exact** explanation?? As far as the shell extensions...I am gonna try disabling them one by one and see if that corrects the problem...I dont know if the right clicking is the cause or just the way that I notice that something isnt right....anyway, thanks for the nfo, shellex is added to my folder with diagnostic progs, like autoruns, HJT, etc!

Danke!

I foyu don't get the control alt delete menu then you have welcome screen enabled and should disable it for the following reasons:

1) It's pointless
2) The control alt delete menu is usfull for exscaping crashed full screen programs.

This last post interested me as I wasn't aware of the difference between the two menus so I disabled the welcome screen. For me, personally, however the only option I am likely to use on the ctl/alt/del menu is to run the task manager (which I use a lot). Also, I now always get the password/logon request (which I also don't use) instead of the welcome screen. So, for me anyway, it's back to the old way.

Start
Control Panel
User Accounts
Change the Way Users Log on or Off
Click Cancel on the popup about FastSwitching
Remove the tick from "Use Welcome Screen"
Job done - just close the open windows.
When you start the computer you will be prompted for a password. If you don't use one (like me) just hit enter and it will boot up normally.

okay thanks, i am interested in the answer to the crtl-alt-del/ctrl-shift-esc mystery!

But back to my original problem, Sparda, I tried using ShellExView to solve this strange explorer.exe glitch, but to no avail. I started by disabling all non MS context menu handlers, and the problem still keeps popping up. Im just not sure if the right click is the cause or just a sign that I have a problem. So Im back to the drawing board. Does anyone have any other ideas? Just to reiterate, everything will be fine, then when I close a program or folder, the folder will close but will "embed" itself on to the desktop in the last position it was in on my desktop (as if my background pic all of a sudden contains a folder in it), and on top of that, right clicking will bring up the appropriate right click menu, but none of the options will be highlight-able. Then I close explorer.exe in the task manager, reopen it in the task manager, and everything will be back to normal until it happens again.

I would really appreciate some help!!!

Hello,

Perhaps if you posted a detailed description of the computer's hardware and software which runs in the background (for example, a HijackThis Log file), then more of the forum's members could help you further troubleshoot the problem.

Regards,

Aryeh Goretsky

I am thinking this might either be related to the HP/Security Update problem or maybe just a general problem with WindowBlinds and explorer.exe Still any suggestions will be duly noted!
Thanks again guys (and gals)
