I have been receiving a error message from Messenger Service, it is like a
pop up. And it states my windows all have a virus infection and I should go
to patchupdate.info. Is this valid or is it a virus we just installed a new
hard drive and reinstalled our windows. how can we have a virus on them if
Mcafee is stating we are fine? Here is the pop up
Now is says stop windows requires immediate attention.
the registry is corrupt and had errors.
patching the errors is required to prevent damage to files.
go to windowsxpcleaner.com and down load the registry cleaner. Do I do this??

will also turn it on).

I realize I'm responding to a post from 18 months ago.

If I have a router (NetGear) should I still turn on the FireWall in XP (I'm
using XP PRO SP1)?

I was told the router is a firewall and turning on the Windows Firewall
would disable the network.

Thank you for responding so quicky Jonathan, I appreciate you answer.

Over the years I've tried on several occasions to go through automatic
update and also visited the MS Update page to load SP2. When my computer goes
through the search it legitimately told/tells me I need to install the
updates (I think I'm 85 behind now). When I continue the program says it
couldn't update for some technical reason. I contacted Dell but they never
helped. I have a legit Windows copy but updating never worked. (I said yes to
all Active X and all other questions.)

I even wrote to MS (before this forum became as user friendly) and told them
my issues. They came back and said I needed to make changes in the registry
but I'm too scared to do that. Since then I have sat at my computer behind my
router/firewall fat, dumb, and stupid and thinking I really need to fix this
one day. (I have 3 other Dell computers on the router but they all came with
SP2.)

I recently had to revisit my old work account and reconnect to their VPN
then almost immediately I was getting the same Error Messenger missives that
attacked the person wrote worte the original message on this thread telling
me I had Critical Registry Problems......

I would be happy to upgrade with some hand holding. Is this the right forum
for this?

Also, I set my router some time ago and now can't find my password to change
the settings, including the file sharing.

Thanks,
philr
