Post subject: Connection to Secure Internet sites
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>security_admin (more info?)
I am running Windows XPsp2; connect to the internet with Earthlink dial-up;
have Norton security. During the week the computer stopped connecting to
secure sites. Earthlink says it is a problem with my browser. How do I fix
this?

In Internet Explorer -
1. Tools > Internet Options > Advanced
2. Scroll down to the Security Settings.
3. Make sure that the two boxes are checked that say
"Enable SSL 2" or "Enable SSL 3".
Try your secure sites.

Another thing you can try is:
Go to start/run
Type in: regsvr32 softpub.dll
Press Enter or click OK

You are a star! I am only "partially computer literate" and have been
struggling for 4 days to solve the same problem but your advice re. going to

I am having this same issue with a Server 2003 computer. I have tried all
steps listed above, and I also tried running the proxycfg command and
deleting the Software Distribution folder. Nothing to this point has worked.
This server is going to be used as a WSUS server, so it is important that we
get this working. This problem seemed to start after automatic updates
appeared at the bottom of the screen and they were NOT installed. I created a
group policy to distribute updates through this server and ever since then, I
have not been able to access any SSL sites with either IE or Firefox. Very
puzzling ...
