I just got a new Dell Inspiron running MCE. I have Pinnacle Studio 8.8 and
Windows Movie Maker. Neither is able to capture video. Pinnacle only comes
up with an error message reading "capture error" and movie maker comes up
with the error that some other program is currently using the video card or
source. Has anyone wholy resolved these issues? Appreciate any help.

I had the same experience as you, but many people here insist that
Windows Movie Maker and "many many other softwares" will be able to
capture from a hardware encoding TV card like hauppauge PVR150.

Maybe they will be albe to give you some ideas.....

By the way, don't take "WinTv2000" as an answer, because that program
does not even load up in windows MCE2005.

I have had the same problem this works for me. Whenever I want to capture
video I have to restart my system. After the restart DO NOT start up Media
Center, go straight to your capture program (in my case either Sonic or
Windows Movie Maker) and it seem to work fine. The only problem is I have to
restart to go back to using Media Center. The only thing I can figure is
whatever program you start first using the capture device takes control and
won't let go until you restart the whole system. Hope this help..... Helmet

I'm having this same problem and have tried shutting down all the items in
Start Up, as I was told from my computer mfg. It didn't make any difference.
They said this issue can be what's causing it. I have tried may different
cable types and even tried an S-video connector coming from the camcorder to
the computer S-Video input. That didn't help. I'm using an older HI8 Sony
camcorder. I'm so frustrated.

I have a Toshiba Qosmio running windows XP MCE. I get that "Device already in
use" error message whenever I try to use windows movie maker to capture a
video from my vcr or camcorder. Its really frustrating but anyway ..... I
found a "work around" on microsoft that didn't work for me but maybe it'll
work for u so here it goes ........

Disable the Media Center Receiver service
To disable the Media Center Receiver service, follow these steps: 1. Click
Start, click Run, type services.msc in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Click Media Center Receiver Service.
3. In the Action menu, click Properties.
4. Click the General tab.
5. In the Startup type box, click Disabled, click OK, and then restart
Windows.

Make sure u note the changes u do so u can reverse the process.
Cheers

Disabling MCE Receiver server did not solve my problem. I do not understand
the logic behind the MCE computers. You can not use Movie Maker and it stays
there.

Actually MovieMaker runs fine, it's just the composite capture that is
problematic in MCE. I think the majority of people using MovieMaker (or any
video editing program), are probably using Firewire from a digital camera
and that runs just fine.

I've been digging the Microsoft sites for days trying to find an answer to
this problem. Like you, when I try to capture video using any app with any
type of input (digital or analog) the app will crash. Most of the time I can
leave the “Would you like to send to Microsoft box” out of the way and I can
finish the capture to my hard drive but I have to restart the app after that
to edit the capture. Even when I try to convert a captured video to another
format the app will crash.
I have all the newest drivers, patches and apps installed, uninstalled and
reinstalled… Still no luck. This is painful !!!

Well, the ATI All In Wonder boards are not really supported in Media Center
because they don't have a hardware encoder on board. If you use a supported
tuner such as a Hauppauge or nVidia, I bet you won't have these problems...
