my nieghbor's browser was hi-jacked and it left her pc in the state of
critical system error. saying a virus was present and it's leading to system
failure. it suggests virusburst. for malware. but you need a credit card to
buy it and run it. we tried mcaffee but it disabled the ability to connect to
internet. what should we do? stacey

nass had good advice and galen's advice is good as a last resort if you
can't get anyhing to help her.

Do NOT go to virusburst! That's probably part of the virus' work. Your
credit card may be violated there.

If you can provide the NAME of the virus from any of the error messages, I
believe I can tell you how to get to Symantec's site or another which
mirrors the same information, where you will find a step by step removal and
repair instruction.

If your browser will work at all, you could try putting 72.246.30.138
in the address bar instead of Symantec.com, and it might just let you get
there. Often the virus just watches for the name, not the IPA, so often
that will work.
Then search for your virus name there.

If you prefer McAfee, they're at 216.49.88.12

tucows.com might also have info on the virus.

If that's no good, come back with what you've tried and we'll make another
go at it. Please also post the virus name here if you know it, just in case
it's a new one.
