I just reformatted my computer and now I have no sound. In my device manager
it says there is a conflict with my 'Multimedia Audio Controller'. I don't
have any drivers. Is there something I can use to find out what I need or
even a known driver I can install. I tried to install somethihng called
'Vinyl AC'97 Codec Combo Driver' but that doesn't work and it keeps giving me
a warning that it "has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its
compatibility with Windows XP." Can someone please help.

Get The Belarc Advisor at <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.belarc.com" target="_blank">www.belarc.com</a> and run it. You will then get a
list of the hardware and software on your system. Use it to determine type
of sound system, then get the drivers from the manufacturer.

Thanks for your help guys. I ran both programs but all it said was
'Multimedia Audio Controller'. So I opened up my computer and looked for the
sound card. All there was behind the audio inputs was a small pink box with
a metal cover over it. Do you have any idea what that could be? Also as I
was trying to work this out I remembered that a program I had before I
formatted was SoundMAX so I went to download it and found the drivers on
driverguide.com but they only had it for Windows 95. So I went to SoundMAX's
website but found nothing there either. Do you have any more suggestions? I
suppose if you don't I will have to call the place where I bought my computer
tomorrow. Thank you again for your help

You must know what sound card you have. Look on your receipt/invoice for
the computer - ask the people you bought the system from, open it up and
look, etc. Use Google to search for the information you find on the cards
chipset if you must.

There are applications out there that can identify what hardware you have,
but I think they all depend on a properly installed system - as I think they
pull the information from the registry. Perhaps they do not - so I will
recommend you try two different ones:

EVEREST Home Edition
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.lavalys.com/products/download.php?pid=1&lang=en&pageid=3" target="_blank">http://www.lavalys.com/products/download.php?pid=1&lang=en&pageid=3</a>

Belarc Advisor
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://belarc.com/free_download.html" target="_blank">http://belarc.com/free_download.html</a>

Once you know what you have, what next? Go get the latest driver for your
hardware/OS from the manufacturer's web page. For example, let's say you
have a Creative Labs sound card or C-Media chipset sound card...

Creative Labs Sound Device
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://us.creative.com/support/downloads/" target="_blank">http://us.creative.com/support/downloads/</a>

C-Media Sound Device
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.cmedia.com.tw/e_download_01.htm" target="_blank">http://www.cmedia.com.tw/e_download_01.htm</a>

Yes - it is built into your mainboard.. Using the programs, identify the
motherboard (mainboard) and go to their web page for drivers..

You can go here and download Aida32. It gives you a very good inventory
of your system. If you have a Via Chipset with
Via AC'97 audio chip then go here and match up the right driver. If you
get a Win Logos warning Ignore it and continue
the install of the driver.

AIDA32 has not been updated for months, is obsolete and is a bad selection.
Try Everest Home at <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.lavalys.com" target="_blank">www.lavalys.com</a> instead.

Hi,

I have exactly the same problem with sound after install Windows XP home
edition on the new hard drive. I went to the Intel website to download the
MaxSound driver for my motherboard version. But when I installed the driver,
there is an error saying that "no driver is found, reboot the system then try
to install again" After I clicked OK button on that error window, the
MaxSound installation said that the driver has been sucessfully installed.
But when I restart the computer the problem is still the same which there is
no sound. I tried to install again and I had no luck.

Other observations:
In the Device Manager, there is no any exclamation mark next to the Sound,
Audio, ... But in Control Panel/Sound & Sound Devices, no devices are
selectable in the tabs 'Sound' and 'Voice' (grey fields with 'No Device'). In
the Hardware tab however, all sound devices are listed.

Does anyone have this problem and got it fixed? Please help, I am giving up
after trying to many ways and suggestions.

Thanks.

I too have this problem. I have been scouring the Internet for an answer, but
I haven't found anything. Mark Russinovich--we need you to solve this--this
sounds like some sort of problem deep in the internal workings of the Windows
XP OS... Help!
