OK I have repeatedly de-selected the Firewall Alert setting in the
security center center -- and even tried this for all user accounts on
the machine, yet after several reboots / cold starts the 'check' grows
back and I get the pop up bubble with the firewall off alert.

Any constructive ideas on this conundrum?

I am using a 3rd party firewall obviously.

XP Professional with all updates applied and the machine has been stable
in all regards other than this problem with the firewall alert.

I feel like I am re-living a scene from the movie 'Groundhog Day'

Windows XP does not, at this point in time, recognize the existence of all
third party firewalls. It was, and still is, the responsibility of the third
parties to update their software so it can be recognized by Windows after
service pack 2 is installed. Most have already done so.

To maximize the possibility that your firewall will be recognized by
Windows, be sure to use only the most recent version of the firewall.

Thats nice Ted, but I turned the security center alarm to the OFF
position. The question is why does it turn itself back ON.

Why not just turn the security center off?

Control Panel > Admin Tools > Services > Security Center - set it to
disabled.

Hi,

There is a command you can use to disable that, but go to
Security & Adminstration group to read the posts. I can`t
remember what it is, but it has been posted in that group
several times.
