I had win98se and the mobo died. I plan to replace the mobo and get a new
CPU to go with it. As long as I'm at it I'd like to move to WinXP. I plan
on keeping th 20GB HD the is currently in machine. Which would make more
sense, an upgrade or OEM WinXP?

I'd also like to add a new (larger HD) and it would be nice to have the OS
living there since it will be a faster HD.

How can I accomplish this (move to XP, add new drive, and get data and
setting from the old HD to the new HD) in the least painful manner. Which
version of XP should I be buying Upgrade or OEM?

So I get the upgrade and install it over the 98Se I currently have.

How can I then get this all over to the new HD where I want the OS to be?
(Similar to just adding a new HD to a system, how do I migrate it to the new
drive?)

You should buy the Upgrade edition. OEM editions of Windows come with no
support and can only be used for a clean install (and the sale of OEM
Windows in the retail channel is a legal grey area).

Take a look here

In order to use a Upgrade XP Disk you will need the Win98SE Disk. You
will have to reinstall all your old programs.
Some may not be compatible with XP. You may need XP Drivers for some of
your older Peripherals ( Printer, Scanner etc. When looking for a new CPU
and Motherboard keep in mind that you may need new Ram and the Power Supply
will
need the required Wattage.

Moving the hard drive with Win98SE on it will be problematical. Win98
will be looking for the older CPU and Motherboard. When you purchase these
new PC Components get a OEM Version along with it. Or better still
investing in a New Box with XP installed on it would be the way to go.
Look on Dell's website.

I have a dell computer.It has windows xp home edition installed. It
crashed on me one day.So I reinstalled the xp disk and it did not work
and could not access the Internet.(I have dsl). After one hour with
dell's tech support. there is another disk with the drivers on it.So
it is not a full xp OEM edition.Thats why Dell can sell them cheap.

Not true. You can do an inplace upgrade over Win98 and most programs will
still be installed. However, one is strongly encouraged to backup all data
first and a clean install is apt to rum much more smoothly
