Post subject: Temp Folders/files
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>basics (more info?)

Hello to Malke, Mike H & Ken B,
Thank you for your welcome.
Since receiving a curt 'wrap on the knuckles' for not doing my research
properly into another annoying prob I had, I tend to hold back and read
through as many similar posts as poss.
I can see the ways to get rid of temp files etc but I do not understand what
is happening in my partic. case.
I have a home/self build (28 May 2005)comp. for flight sim usage in the
main.
The help I got is no longer there for me.
In My Comp/Winxp(DSmile/Temp there are currently 52 Files & 5 Folders using
4.93MB on disk. These have built up from 5 files and 3 folders on 19 August
2005. I cant find a way to copy these on-block into this post
so..............
The folders are;
Cookies with an Index.dat file, 16kb dated 21/08/05 - the date sometimes
changes but nothing goes in it.
History with another folder History.IE5. In this is desktop.ini config
settings 1kb creat/modified 21/08/05 plus an index.dat file created
21/08/05, modif 25/08/05
Temp Int Files containing Content.IE5 folder created 13/08/05
containing the same/similar desktop config creat/mod 21/08/05
and index.dat file creat 23/08/05 - mod 25/08/05.
Nothing changes in the above folders.
Now each time I switch on and off the others recreate themselves - recently
a load of IMTxx.xml files came in as well.
The others are mainly ZLTOxxx.TMP, -DFCxxx.tmp, -DF(then a number)xxx.tmp
The DF and ZLT I can see are I.E. TMP files. Every time I switch on I get
one of each, with slight changes.
Togther with the above 3 I get 2 Perflib_Perfdata's but they dont always
join the others. These are noted as DAT files with unknown applic.
Oh I hope to God you are still with me!!!!!
In My Comp/WinXP (DSmile/Windows there is another Temp folder which is empty
and has always been so since build.
Some weeks ago I happened to venture into 7-Zip and in there is a
desktop.ini created 21/08/05 and a dat.file created 23/08/05 unknown
applic. - seems to be the same as others mentioned above.
When I do a disk clean, nothing goes from the ever filling Temp. folder,
certainly none of those indicated as temp int files. And disk clean says I
have nothing in Temporary files at all. Is there another temp folder
somewhere that I cannot see.
When I look into D\Docs & Setting\name\Local Sets\Temp In files is is packed
and nothing seems to go from there either.
On 15/08/05 my co-builder did a reinstall of XP but problem continued.
Prior to that this Temp folder had contained 600 plus files. Deleting those
that would delete in groups of 20 at a time only made then regenerat as
copy, then cop2, then copy 3 - up to copy 8. So each one had to be deleted
one at a time.
And that is whay I have to do now. The only ones that do ot delete are
those most recently generated.
I am so sorry this has turned out to be such a long post and that you have
managed to endure the journey.

To delete *all* Temporary Internet Files...

1) Start | Run | Type: inetcpl.cpl | OK
Or right click the Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop.
Or: Start | Settings | Control Panel | Internet Options.
Best to do this with all instances of Internet Explorer closed. Especially
if there are a large number of files.
2) On the General Tab, in the middle of the screen, click on Delete Files
3) Check the box ? Delete all offline content {This cleans >>
%homepath%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
AND
%homepath%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5
and \Content.MSO (Created by an MS Office program)}
4) Click on OK and wait for the hourglass icon to stop after it deletes the
temporary internet files
5) You can now click on Delete Cookies and click OK to delete cookies that
websites have placed on your hard drive.

I have replied three times to you and K.B. without success.
Got through to Andrew and have done his bit.
If this works I will try again to reply to your help

Antioch,

As Sharon posted in your other thread, Reply to Group not Reply to Sender.

I read all messages in the preview pane. I right click the message header
and click Reply to Group. Occasionally I hit Reply to Sender without being
aware of it. I usually discover this long after the fact. I have
Automatically put people I reply to in my Address Book set and this applies
only to E-mail messages not newsgroup messages. I will be looking through
my Address Book and see something like
JoeBobBriggs.TakeThisOut@discussions.microsoft.com Who the heck is that? Wink

If you hit Reply to Sender to me, I'll never get the message as my address
is munged, just like yours is.

Anyway, I thought you might like something to chuckle at. Smile

Dangit, I just looked through my Address Book and found three of these
entries.

Hello Wesley
I have done rgt click on your first reply.
Then All Groups.
What is different though is that your reply is not there. In my first
attempt, I spliced my responses/comment at each stage of your help.
I get same result if I double lft click on your reply and thenclick all
groups - your info goes again.
So I am even more confused.
But I shall continue regadless.
Thank you such a clear set of instructions
1) That is how I currently get rid of temp/int/files & cookies.
2 & 3) I have often wondered about this - thanks for giving the confidence
to check.

4 & 5) DONE - Everything has gone when I viewed files etc.
Thanks for the pic - most useful.

I'll try anything but musnt get too cocky!
So into the Advanced tab - DONE - thats cool.

Clear History - DONE. As a rule I always clear on leaving I.E.
Does one way clear better than the other?

Set days to 0 - DONE

Clear IE Hist/AutoComplete etc etc

Woops - youre starting to lose me here - the red haze is coming. Hairs are
pricking up on the neck. This where you start to talk to the 'pork'
I am in Classic - I prefer it -
I have got to 'clear button' and click OK. So I am back in Start menu/task
bar but there is no Apply option.
Classic is still ticked - I can click OK or Cancel as choices.
Sorry to appear so stupid - could you please clarify this last bit. Do I go
back to Start again/props/custom etc

Would you say this last bit is a weekly routine or not. I clear temp/int &
cookies weekly.
Now all I have to do s cross everything and pray this gets through to you.

Right click the Start button | Properties | Customize button | Clear button
|
Click OK

Apply will be grayed out because you haven't changed anything.

I clear everything every day. Depends on your web surfing and newsgoups
habits.

Hello Wesley
To top-post or not to top-post, that is the question? -
thats why I tend to splice - shouldnt offend either camp!
Thank you so much for your help - including the posting bit - what a twit -
everything is now clear.
I have your instructions typed out and stuck to the side of the tower.
Im afraid I am also a daily cleaner.
However I can see little point in using diskclean - cant say it does
anything.

want to do a new post and I cant remember what it was I used.
If all OK dont reply - silence will tell me.

Hi Everyone,
I have seen very many requests on the newsgroups for
removing these damm tempory files. I too had lots accumulate. Some of which
defied deletion. I found a program that I use and it works most of the time.
For the older users in Dos there was a program called X-Tree Gold and it was
a great program for all sorts of things. Well there is now a 32 bit version
that works with all the Windows up to XP. I suggest some of you go get it and
try it. It will deletecomplete branches of your directory. BUT BEWARE it is
very powerful and as such it can maybe do naughty things in the wrong hands.
Good deleting
