Greetings:

My Windows Explorer keeps indicating that it is "Searching for items..." in
the Status Bar. It appears very briefly every second, and just as quickly
flashes my mouse icon to an hourglass.

Explorer does not have a problem enumerating drives, nor taking too long to
do so, which seems to be what most of the posts about this situation are
about. My situation is that it occurs about every second or less, and
causes the following problem...

Whenever I try to use the drop-down box in an open file dialog to browse for
files, the drop-down box almost immediately resets itself to the collapsed
state. This makes it impossible to use the GUI to browse for a file (I need
to type the path name in on most [but not all] of my applications). I have
confirmed it [the drop-down box collapse] happens in sync with the
'Searching for items...' text in my separate explorer window.

What service or registry setting is causing this to happen, and where can I
modify the frequency or disable the feature entirely?

Any and all replies will be appreciated.

Thanks
