Over the years I have accumulated over a hundred duplicate and triplicate items and
items never used or no longer on my computer in unchecked msconfig startup. How can I
delete them?

How many years?

I personally backup, fdisk and format my Win98 computers every year or
so, a clean start and a clean boot really make a difference in
performance. If you're lazy you can use a mirror program after the
first reload when you get your system "just right" and restore from your
best configuration after you wipe the hard drive.

Can you give me step by step instructions how to do that. I am a pediatric nurse, not
a computer tech. I can follow directions, if they are specific, though.

First, start regedit and expand the following keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Beneath each key, you will probably find a similar key followed by a hyphen(Run-,
RunServices-). This is where the information for some of the disabled programs
is stored. You can delete individual entries or the entire key. Next, check
"C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Disabled Startup Items" and
"C:\Windows\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Disabled Startup Items"
and move or delete any unwanted items. Finally, open "C:\Windows\Win.ini",
find the "[windows]" section and remove any lines that begin with "norun=" or
"noload=".

13.6 GB Ultra ATA Hard Drive, 7200 RPM
128 MB, SDRAM Memory - I added 256 for a total of 384 which I am told by Dell is the
most I can add to this 1999 (date of purchase from Dell) system.
I have Windows Second Edition which is (SE). I never heard of FE.
The Iomega Zip takes 250MB Discs. I have never backed up my whole system. (I have my
pictures backed up on six - 250mb discs.

I have a 6xMax Variable DVD-ROM Drive (Toshiba, I believe, factory installed).
I have a Pentium III MiniTowerBase with 512K Cache
I think there are open bays - It looks like it from the outside but I haven't been
inside in quite some time.
Are you sure I can exchange the DVD-ROM drive with a CD-RW??
Anyway, how do I go about adding a hard drive? and what am I looking for on these
links??

I hesitate to acquiesce that you upgrade to the irradiation of XP! It isn't
necessarily as bad as it sounds to install a 2nd hard drive. I'm having trouble
finding specs for that model, though...

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Dell+Dimension+XPS+T450&btnG=Google+Search
Google comes up with many for "Dell Dimension XPS T450", but when I click them-- it
rarely is there!

Best I've come is...
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/tech-data/B00005UJYT/ref=de_a_smtd/10...893571-
Did that computer come with just one 6.4 GB hard drive & a CD-ROM? There may be a
BIOS concern about how large a 2nd hard drive can be, then. And it's Win98FE-- not
SE? (I guess it could be a lot of work.)

(1) Did you see a bay inside on which to dock a 2nd hard drive?
(2) What is the capacity of the zip drive?
(3) What/how have you backed up so far?

I guess you could replace the CD-ROM with a CD-R/W.

| Dell Dimension XPS T450, Desktop. I added memory successfully....... but when I
read
| these directions below.....they might as well be in another language. This is a
| little overwhelming for a pediatric nurse. I think I'll just get a new computer.

| You could make do with the ZIP or CD-R/W. But I think, really, you should get a 2nd
| hard drive. You'll need it, anyway, at the time the current one crashes! Have you
| looked inside the box to see whether there is room for one...?...
|
| Naturally, the first consideration is whether there is room inside the
| box. (Well, actually, there undoubtedly also are external possibilities,
| but I know nothing of them.) So,
|
| (1) What is your computer & model number?
| (2) Do you have a manual to look through?
|
| My book clearly showed every screw along the way. (I had to lift out the
| power supply of my Compaq 7470 to get to the innards.) However, it is
| possible to get by without it. There will be literature with the new
| hard drive. There will be two wires to connect. One to a power connector
| on the drive. The other will either be
|
| (a) A cable going from the new drive directly to the motherboard (the
| drive will become a Secondary Master) or
|
| (b) A connector on the cable that already connects the Primary Master to
| the motherboard will plug into the new drive (the new drive is a Slave).
|
| Presuming the box is open & you have access...
|
| (1) You must get the jumpers right, acc. to a diagram on the drive. The
| new one may have a booklet, too. Different manufacturers/models have
| different positions for the jumpers to say the same thing. A jumper is a
| little, colorful, plastic covered device that will be placed over two
| pins on the hard drive. Depending upon which pins it covers, the drive
| is a Master, Slave, etc.
|
| (a) Jumper the new drive as Slave, if you will plug it to the
| cable holding the Primary Master.
| Or set it as Master, if you will connect directly to the MB
| with it's own cable.
|
| (b) The Primary Master (the one you've already got in there),
| especially if it's a Western Digital, may need to be changed to "Master
| with slave", instead of "Master alone on cable". State the name/model of
| the drive, if examining it's diagram doesn't make it clear. This drive
| may need to be removed to see it's diagram. Likely, there are four
| screws involved. Naturally, this won't apply, if the new drive is
| connected to the motherboard, using it's own cable.
|
| (c) If making a Slave, try plugging it into the free connector on
| the cable. However, some computers may require that the Master & Slave
| be in specific positions on the cable. (I believe my Slave is closest to
| the motherboard on the cable, in the middle connector.)
|
| If this is to be a Secondary Master, plug it into the free
| slot on the motherboard. Examine the connector & the pins it is plugging
| into. You will see the orientation that is required, by the parallel
| lines on the side of the connector & slot. Once sure of that, give it a
| push.
|
| (d) Plug a free 4-prong power connector into the new drive. There should be
some
| loose ones inside the box.

| | FIRST, select a good backup program, & back everything up...!...
| |
| | Once you have a functioning system, especially one close to a clean
| | install, do a full system backup. If you have multiple partitions, I
| | guess a backup is a bit more complex. It depends upon the ties between
| | the Registry & the other partitions, as to whether they must be backed
