Why would you want to get rid of it when the
drive used to work with that twist in (part of)
the data cable? If still interested, go to the
library and read about the cables required
for old DOS PCs.

The twist or reverse in a section of the ribbon wire is intentional and
therefore normal.

Again though to your original problem, floppy drives do fail, but with the
price to replace them starting at only $5 it's an easy thing to solve.
To prove the old one is bad first you can even use a second hand one if you
or your neighbor has one in a used tower, etc, and try it out before you
buy a new one.
