have WIN98SE on a Compaq P3. Used an Envision LCD monitor on it for a few
months. Needed to switch with an Envision CRT monitor temporarily. Loaded
the drivers for the CRT monitor, now during boot up I get the following error
message " Display- There is a problem with your display settings. The adapter
type is incorrect, or the settings do not work with your hardware" System
comes up in 640x480 16 colors mode. Try to reset to 800x600 256 colors or
up and it reboots but comes back with same error. Have unistalled and
reinstalled the monitor driver and video driver. Have put the LCD monitor
back on system that was working with it and still get same error.

Any suggestions?

Ron

What is the video adapter display hardware? How have you identified it,
and how did you identify the correct driver for it? What happened when you
tried to install the video display adapter driver?

In Device Manager, what is the current description for the video adapter and
for the monitor?

Jeff,

Video adapter is identified as Diamond Stealth III 16MB S540 Graphic Card.
This is the same description as has been on the machine since it was
acquired. i assume it is the card that came in the computer when it was
built. Again this machine with this video card worked for several months
until I switched monitors from an Envision 7410 LCD to a Envision 710 CRT.
the video card has not been changed.

Try removing the video display adapter driver in safe mode and re-booting
and allow Windows to install the default driver. Check operation with the
default driver, then install the correct adapter driver.

Jeff,

Went into Safe Mode and removed video adapter from device manager and took
all the video adapter programs out of add/remove programs. Rebooted and
system installed default PCI VGA driver. This displays in 640x480 16 color
mode, which doesn't tell me much because that is the same mode the system has
been defaulting to with the problem. It just won't go to anything higher.

I then had the system re-install the driver for the adapter in the system
and am back to where I started from with the error message and the system
display stuck in 640x480 mode.

640x480x16 with the standard VGA adapter is correct. The point of that part
of the process is to get you back to a known starting point, not to resolve
the issue.

It seems that your hardware driver needs a more complex installation
procedure.

Repeat the steps to get back to the standard VGA adapter, then follow the
process Brian has described and see if the installation works better that
way.
