I appreciate your venom directed at certain parties (even though
even by my standards it is slightly exaggerated), but the ME
defragger is NOT 20 times faster, that is like claiming IE is
the safest browser there is. I have it on my 95B and 98SE Lite
machines and the only difference I have noticed is that it
doesn't tell me (in MS's "so helpful" manner) what percentage of
my disk is defragged and whether it "needs" to be defragged, it
just goes to work. It might well work better - it APPEARS to be
an Intel product - but it is NOT noticeable.
If anyone wants it, there are dozens of places you can get it in
a zip file along with the better scandisk. I can't provide a
link because I've had it forever and can't remember where I got
it. Google.
OP: The DOS command is:
scandisk C:
I don't know where you got the <C> from.
[BTW: MVP's: How come you can't defrag in DOS?]
AFA defragging hanging or restarting, NOTHING can be happening
on the drive while you are defragging it, or the process will
restart. That includes screen savers, looking at an old email or
WHATEVER. That's what partitions are for. NOTHING except the OS
and programs should be on the C: drive.
However, since there seems to be a rather successful conspiracy
between brand-name computer manufacturers and Microsoft to
eliminate the word "partition" from the computer realm, I will
only say that I have 6 or 7 partitions on my 95B machine and 16
or so on my 98SE Lite machine and I USUALLY defrag C: (or any
other partition for that matter) in less than 3 minutes, often
in less than one.
I have a friend who likes to defrag his (one partition) machine
every day (!) and watch it struggle for 2 hours or more. It
gives him the satisfaction of having a "well-maintained"
computer. Need I say more?
