I have windows 98se Dell desktop xps t450 with 387 ram. Computer Associates Internet
Security Suite (which I finally got installed correctly? yesterday) . Now I can not
defragment my C drive even if I disable all of my VS, firewall, anti-spyware. and do
a ctrl-alt-delete of everything except explorer and systray (by the way ...the sound
setting megaphone has disappeared from my systray) Please Help.I have cable
connection. Defrag just spins its wheels. sometimes it goes to 1% but then drops back
to 0% again. >> Stay informed about: defrag won't work |

TROUBLESHOOTING PROBLEMS WITH DISK DEFRAGMENTER
1. Apply one recommendation at a time and then try Defrag again to see if
it helped.
2. Disable the screensaver, anti virus program and the cable/DSL modem, if
any.
3. Delete the files in the Recycle Bin, the browser cache (Temporary
Internet Files folder if using MSIE) and the Temp, History and Recent
folders. Corrupt files can cause Defrag problems.
4. You may receive a notice indicating the drive was written to and caused
Defrag to restart. This means some process is causing hard drive activity
which interferes with Defrag. Either reboot to safe mode and run Defrag
from there or use EndItAll2, a free program which shuts down nearly all
running programs except Explorer and Systray. Download the program from
here: http://www.docsdownloads.com/Tier1/enditall.htm To boot to safe mode
in W98, see: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q180/9/02.asp
5. It's possible corrupt files in the Cookies and Applog folders will cause
Defrag problems. Since those files contain useful information, you can
either move them to a partition other than the one being Defragged or to
floppy disks. Once Defrag is complete, you can replace the files. If it
appears either folder contains corrupt files, you will either have to try to
determine which files are corrupt, delete all the files and let them rebuild
as part of your normal operations or move the folders during the next Defrag
session. If you run into problems deleting a file because it is corrupt, try
deleting it from a DOS prompt.
6. The first Defrag after installing or upgrading to Win98 may take a
significant amount of time to complete. Also, Defrag may appear to stall
out at the 10% mark; however, this is a common occurrence. As long as there
is disk activity, let Defrag run. The appearance of stalling with W95 may
also occur but it will generally be before 10%.
7. There are plenty of MS Knowledge Base articles on Defrag features and
problems:

Yes Henry it does work with all versions of XP (I have it on my XP Pro
laptop). I'm just updating my websites with that information. I never
posted it there before since there's rarely any need to use it with XP
unlike 98 & especially ME! (that pesky memory leak never did get fixed!!)
Hope this helps;

I found the same thing until I disable my screen saver and then it works
OK. On one occasion I even turnoff (unpluged) my high speed modem. >> Stay informed about: defrag won't work |

I don't run a screensaver. and I can not find the Enditall download anywhere on the
site. It tells all about it but I can not find the actual download to click on. What
am I missing?

If you go to the bottom of the descriptive text you'll see the hyperlinked
word >>> MORE <<< - just click on it to get to the download page. If you
can't find it then try this link >>>

Try it in DOS. Reboot, press f8, choose option 5 Command Mode only,
and then type DEFRAG. Norton's Speed Disk, the Windows version of
SPEEDISK, included in System Works works much faster than DEFRAG
as it moves disc clusters in groups.

no matter what 'all' the 'micro' people in this group tell you....
they will 'refuse' to tell you to get WIN-ME's defragment program....
ME's defrag program is at least 20 times faster and more efficient than
win 98's.......... its a KNOWN fact.
(unfortunately, the VIP's in this group are 'gagged' by microsoft to tell
you this...... and their loyalties and morals and ethics are strictly
orientated to microsoft rather than compassion or logic. )
Follow the rest of the recommendations from people in this thread, then
proceed to ASK anyone of them where YOU can obtain winME's version
of Defrag.....!
You will find that due to the fact that some of their colleagues have
branched off from 'micro' at their sites, they actually 'offer' the defrag
program for FREE.
The people who do this are generally fed up with micro's 'Attitude' to the
common man.
Go for it friend, you will notice your computer defragged within minutes. >> Stay informed about: defrag won't work |

You are talking about something that you have no clue about and frankly, I
resent your comments. I do not recommend using the ME defragger because
there is a violation of a legal contract involved. If you want to recommend
using it, feel free but quit casting dispersions at MVPs because some (or
all) of us do not. You have had a lousy attitude ever since your problem
with Candlin and you ought to stop and think about what you are saying. The
regulars in this group are here to read about **computer** problems.

I appreciate your venom directed at certain parties (even though
even by my standards it is slightly exaggerated), but the ME
defragger is NOT 20 times faster, that is like claiming IE is
the safest browser there is. I have it on my 95B and 98SE Lite
machines and the only difference I have noticed is that it
doesn't tell me (in MS's "so helpful" manner) what percentage of
my disk is defragged and whether it "needs" to be defragged, it
just goes to work. It might well work better - it APPEARS to be
an Intel product - but it is NOT noticeable.
If anyone wants it, there are dozens of places you can get it in
a zip file along with the better scandisk. I can't provide a
link because I've had it forever and can't remember where I got
it. Google.
OP: The DOS command is:
scandisk C:
I don't know where you got the <C> from.
[BTW: MVP's: How come you can't defrag in DOS?]
AFA defragging hanging or restarting, NOTHING can be happening
on the drive while you are defragging it, or the process will
restart. That includes screen savers, looking at an old email or
WHATEVER. That's what partitions are for. NOTHING except the OS
and programs should be on the C: drive.
However, since there seems to be a rather successful conspiracy
between brand-name computer manufacturers and Microsoft to
eliminate the word "partition" from the computer realm, I will
only say that I have 6 or 7 partitions on my 95B machine and 16
or so on my 98SE Lite machine and I USUALLY defrag C: (or any
other partition for that matter) in less than 3 minutes, often
in less than one.
I have a friend who likes to defrag his (one partition) machine
every day (!) and watch it struggle for 2 hours or more. It
gives him the satisfaction of having a "well-maintained"
computer. Need I say more?
