I concur. It is a great site. I will have to have a security web-page
someday and I already have a very limited blog on computers -- nothing
like Chris Quirke's MVP blog which I almost always enjoy reading. The
stupid thing was that I replied once and Chris kindly replied back.
Next thing the feature has to be disabled by Chris because of some --
sorry --- bleeping (fill in blank creatively here) spammer hits his
blog. The people who do this are terrible in my opinion and make the
Internet a meaner place to be a part of in the community.

Thank you so much Gary for being my trainer in computers. I see you
as my teacher and me as your student. Because of your excellent
training people at work thought that I had a computer science degree.
It is actually a Batchers of Arts from a large public university ---
Classics major (lots of Greek and Roman history, some mythology and some
limited Latin and Greek) with Cultural Anthropology Minor (I enjoyed
this and it gave me an appreciation of all cultures) with an emphasis in
Middle Eastern studies. (I wanted to understand the threats we face from
there and the hatred the terrorists have towards us in the United States
and actually all of Western Civilization)

I was never good at math and I did take some computer classes but
the last thing I want is to be chained (eg tied-down) figuratively from
9am-5pm at the office. I need and want to move around -- too
energetic to sit for too long. I also have learned stuff from studying
about the history of Microsoft from several books and reading up on
computer books about programming, security and other stuff. I sometimes
wonder why I have not tried Linux earlier. I also have skills from
trial and error which mainly involve my PC and messing it up before I
had the skills that I have now but I have also FUBAR a few other
people's PCs and now I am much more careful to get permission first
before I work on a computer and that seems to be essential in helping to
prevent a FUBAR system at least for me. The only correlation that I can
think of is the movie -- Office Space which while an extreme view and
highly unlikely to happen is funny and entertaining to me. Thank you
and your expertise will always be welcome to me despite our prior
issues, I bear you great respect and see you as a good man with a great
potential.

I extend this respect and caring to Chris Quirke, MVP and his
tireless work towards showing us all why NT must be reworked and Chris
has been the inspiration to me in my current tri-based source code work.
In addition, great and welcome thanks to PCR despite how he used to have
long lists of web links -- I do not notice that as much and see that as
a good thing, Ron, MVP a great man who I respect. Tim from .gov who is
a man who has shown great humility and does not post offensive stuff
even when others are mean to him -- that takes a man of great character
in my opinion. Robear, for being a security expert and emailing me when
I started using Thunderbird since he was surprised to see its extra
features and that is one reason I prefer Firefox is because of its extra
features and enjoy them both for being open source solutions from
Mozilla that I think should by default be included on all new PC's.
Jeff, MVP for his great thoughts and kindness. I also include 98 guy in
this list because although he has problems with Microsoft -- I think he
was the first one to extract the Windows 2000 patch and then post about
it here so everyone could also fix theirs --- the manual solution is the
way to go --- I do not know how well the automatic route has worked and
can anyone here please comment on that since I have so many 98 Second
Edition PC's that I need to patch at work for this vulnerability -- vgx.dll.

Actually, I was going to post this as a reply but I had better
change and not hijack this post and let people have a chance and just
start a new thread and giggle -- time to cut and paste -- grin --
reminds me of being a kid again and cutting and pasting <smile -- this
is the life>

Dan, my "site" consists of two pages, both of them written so that I could
refer people there instead of writing the same stuff over and over and over
again (or using Master Posts.) You want to thank someone, thank Jim
Eshelman. There is a true Saint!

You are welcome.

That's right, don't go hijacking threads & making words unpronounceable, either!

VGX DLL 2,286,080 09-18-06 2:23p vgx.dll

That is too big to fit on a floppy. If the machines have CD-ROM, put it on a CD with a little .bat file to do the work, like...

REN C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VGX\vgx.dll vgx.dll.W98
COPY X:\Vgx.dll C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VGX

...., where "X:" is the CD-ROM letter. Unfortunately, that letter may not be the same for every machine, though.

| Thanks PCR, your humor, knowledge and wisdom always have lifted my
heart.

You are welcome. OOPS, well, If you ran that little .bat in a Windows
DOS box, it would work. But in True DOS of course you'd have to use
Short File Names, which very likely would be...

REN C:\Progra~1\Common~1\Micros~1\VGX\vgx.dll vgx.dll.W98
COPY X:\Vgx.dll C:\Progra~1\Common~1\Micros~1\VGX

.... But it wouldn't absolutely, positively & indubitably be that due to
arcane SFN name rules!

Hi there. Just wandered in a bit late on this thread and was wondering
what VGX.DLL helps with? Checked mine and it's from '99 and about half
the size of the one mentioned here. Does size really matter? :0)

That is well described here...
http://forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?t=595539

But, my prior W98SE Vgx.dll was 2,283,008 bytes... v.6.00.2800.1411.
The W2k version is just slightly larger at... 2,286,080 bytes,
v.6.00.2800.1580.

I'm not sure of the implications. Are you fully updated at Windows
Update?

If there's a single definition of a Saint, Jim Eshelman is it. You can check
out Aumha.org and Aumha.net, and other than that, I'd have to tell long
stories of Jim's efforts on the behalf of Windows users over the years, and
that's such a large topic that I simply don't have time for it right now.

Plus, Jim's efforts on behalf of Windows users is only a small part of his
contributions to society.
