Might have to make that a bit clearer.
gonzojohn:
1. Undo whatever you did.
2. Look for the existing [VCACHE] heading that already existed in the
SYSTEM.INI file. Place your cursor at the end of this line.
3. Press the down arrow once. Then press <Enter>.
4. Type in the MaxFileCache line with the value you wish to insert. Ron's
suggestion of 512000 is actually a bit conservative. This value is in KB,
and 512MB is 524288KB. So you can use up to that 524288 amount if you
desire.
5. Save and close the file.
6. Restart the system.

Here's what I modified:
MPEGVideo2=mciqtz.drv
[vcache]
MaxFileCache=542488
[Password Lists]

I change to c:\
I type c:\>system. ini
bad command...I can see sysem ini in the dir but cannot pull it up..
I tried c:\> edit system.ini

I am not sure why you have tagged onto this thread as you are not the original
poster and may not even have the same circumstances. It probably would be better to
start your own thread with all your pertinent information and exactly what you have
done so far. I have included, above, the text of your two posts in this thread.
Gary suggested adding lines to [vcache] and renaming the autoexec.bat and config.sys
files on your hard drive.
I think you need to back up a few steps and first tell us exactly HOW you removed
Linux, what was still on the drive after that, how you reinstalled Win98, and when
during the process you got each of the error messages you mention. Do this in your
new thread.
Additionally, your latest reply states you are starting at the A:\ prompt, so you
are booting with a floppy disk. If you are trying to edit a file on the hard drive,
you need to have EDIT on the floppy.
Also tell us how much RAM is actually installed in the computer.
See here for more tips:

I used to get a sporadic EXEC warning that has disappeared since the memory
fix.
I previously blamed it in some bells & whistles added by my ISP.
