Post subject: Win NT Setup
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsnt>misc (more info?)

I have SCSi computer with two Adaptec adapters,
2940UW and 29160, P3 400 MHZ, 256 RAM.
9 GB drive partitioned to two partitions 2 GB each
the rest of the drive ignored.
The 2940UW is 1/2 a GB.
With two CD-ROM drives, each connected to each adapter,

I try to install Win NT 4 first release, but I always
end up with a blue screen, saying to use the restore option ??
right after it detects my hardware.
I actually have two NT CDs, with the same problem.

I tried installing from both booted CD, and setup disks.
The last error I got after recognizing my SCSI adapter software
and adapter. That the drive is 1024 sectors, but continued
setup, but then give error that can't see a DOS partitioned
drive. while I just formatted it, was running Win 95 on it.

I Fdisk and format it again using Win 95 fdisk and format.exe,
but still says it can't see the drive. I did feed the Adaptec drivers
when installing.

I have installed NT 4 many times in the 90s with no problem.
I tried use both drive on each SCSI adapter
with the same results.
Wonder what is missing, or is it a known issue.

System might sound old, but it is in mint condition and
hardly used.
I use it to test software, I have about 8 hard drives with
all operating systems, that I plug in.

I have installed NT with both of those scsi cards so NT4 does support them.

My suggestions are as follows;

Don't fdisk and format before install. Let install do that.
Only use the cd not the floppies
Hit f6 and install the scsi driver [not drivers - use only one card]
Make sure the scsi cards are on their own irq/base io address
Make sure the scsi chain the drive is on is properly terminated

Thank you very much, I will try it.
I did buy Win NT with SP4 from Ebay for $19,
but I rather install the first release.

In May 1997, NT4 came with SP1 rolled in
(since there was disk corruption in original)
but since then ms refused to roll in any
service packs .. so do original install then
apply sp6a

Thank you very much, this worked.
I bought Adaptec 2940 for $1.99 from eBay, and it worked,
paid him $15 for the trouble.

I still have two 2940s in my hardware bone pile, each bought back then
at those kind of prices. I guess they'll be heading to the trash can
next time I sort through things.

Anyone want an external SCSI Jaz drive and 12 or 15 1GB cartridges?
That little lot cost me well over $1,000.

There have been too many shockers like that in my life.

Even ignoring the way a dollar is worth a lot less today ...

What I payed for my first 1 MB SIMM would get me two 1 GB PC3200
DIMMs today.

What I payed for my first 20 MB, blazingly fast 1800 RPM IDE hard
drive would get me five 200 GB, 7200 RPM SATA drives today.

What I payed for my first 12" CGA monitor would get me a nice 19"
LCD today.

A 2.2 GHz dual-core Athlon64 X2 4400+ costs a little less than
my first 12 MHz 80286.
