There are Clipboard utilities out there, but they are unnecessarily complicated, like ClipMate. What's needed is not the ability to save and name stuff. All that's needed is a Clipboard that keeps a record of, say, the last three or four copied/cut items that were in the Clipboard and makes them instantly accessible if the user wants them.

So, the way it would work is, if you've copied "ABC" to Clipboard, and then you've copied "XYZ" to clipboard, but you still want to paste "ABC," you open Clipboard and click on a tab or window (let's say there are three such tabs) that contains the previous Clipboard contents "ABC," and that becomes the active clipboard contents and you can then paste it.

This would be a very simple, light utility. I wonder if anything like this exists.

Thanks,
Larry

This is about Clipboard viewer, which I've used for years. It's handy to check what's currently in the Clipboard, but it's not handy for retrieving recent Clipboard contents. Each item has to be saved to a file, then retrieved. This is much to many steps for what is needed.

What is needed is simply a Clipboard that keeps the last three or so Clipboard items in an instantly accessable form in the Clipboard itself. Not in a saved and named file, but in the Clipboard where it can be clicked on. So that if you have one thing in Clipboard you're planning to paste, but had to copy something else and so displaced the previous contents from Clipboard, it's not lost but can be instantly retrieved again.

I have used PC Mag's ClipTrak since it was first introduced as a free utility in
1999. It is no longer free, however. A single download from ZDNet is $7.97 US:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,114185,00.asp

A free alternative that has other features you don't have to use, and is less
involved than ClipMate, is Yankee Clipper 3:
http://www.intelexual.com/products/YC3/

There's a huge collection listed here, both shareware and freeware:
http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Utilities/Clipboard_Management_Tools/

Here are just the free ones:

I agree with Glen Ventura. I've used Yankee Clipper 3 for several years. I
have it on my start list and it retains everything you put on the clip
board -- up to several hundred items as I recall. Doubt if anyone would
ever keep that many, though. The "shoot" function is particularly useful
for recalling and pasting past clipboard items. And it's super simple to
use and it's free.

Clipomatic: http://www.mlin.net/Clipomatic.shtml. Once installed and running
(takes very little processor power AFAICS), clipboard works as usual -
Ctrl-X, C, and V for cut, copy, paste (standard Windows functions, though
mouse addicts don't know those); however, Ctrl-Alt-V will pop up a menu of
the last up to ten (I think) clips saved - you then click on one of them, or
type its number, and it will be pasted and the menu will disappear. You can
make some clips stay in the list (in fact I think you can have several such
lists IIRR).

It's a whopping 96K download ... (-:

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Yankee Clipper 3 and Clipomatic looked like the best bets. So I downloaded Yankee Clipper first and it is exactly what I was looking for, as though I had designed it myself. The YC window is activated with a simply key combo, in the window the previous two or three clipboard contents are listed, I use the down arrow to select the past clipboard content I want, I press Enter, and that text goes into the Clipboard. Perfect.

Also it has other neat things. For example, if I've saved a hyperlink to clipboard, that hyperlink is still an active link in the YC window, so I just click on it and the webpage opens.

Thanks again.

Post subject: The Clipboard functionality that's really needed [Login to view extended thread Info.]
Archived from groups: per prev. post (more info?)

However, now I know what I really want.

99 percent of the time, the previous clipboard content I want is the one immediately preceding the current content.

Therefore what is needed is an application that with a single keystroke, without the user having to open a window or anything, replaces the current clipboard content with the content that immediately preceded it.

With Yankee Clipper, four keystrokes are needed to replace the current clipboard content with the previous and to be ready to paste it:

Alt+Ctrl+Y to activate the YC window;
Down arrow to select the previous content;
Enter to put the previous content in the clipboard
Escape to dismiss the YC window and return to the application I was working on.

What's needed is to be able to the equivalent of those four steps with a single keystroke.

Larry,

Without bothering to "count clicks", here's how I use YC 3:

I have it on my start menu so that it appears in the tray at boot. Since it
is active, it records anything that has been put on the clip board. When I
want to paste ANY previous clipboard item, I click on the YC 3 icon in the
tray, select the item to be pasted, right click on it, then right click on
"shoot" that appears on the resulting context menu, then move the cursor to
the desired paste location, then, within 5 seconds, left click and voila,
it's pasted! This becomes so automatic with use that it's just click,
click, click and it's done -- no storing, transferring and retrieving or
other hassles.

Also, you can move ANY previous item on YC 3 to the head of the list, and
hence onto the clipboard by double clicking on it. Maybe that's what you're
looking for.

However, now I know what I really want.

99 percent of the time, the previous clipboard content I want is the one
immediately preceding the current content.

Therefore what is needed is an application that with a single keystroke,
without the user having to open a window or anything, replaces the current
clipboard content with the content that immediately preceded it.

With Yankee Clipper, four keystrokes are needed to replace the current
clipboard content with the previous and to be ready to paste it:

Alt+Ctrl+Y to activate the YC window;
Down arrow to select the previous content;
Enter to put the previous content in the clipboard
Escape to dismiss the YC window and return to the application I was working
on.

What's needed is to be able to the equivalent of those four steps with a
single keystroke.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Yankee Clipper 3 and Clipomatic
looked like the best bets. So I downloaded Yankee Clipper first and it is
exactly what I was looking for, as though I had designed it myself. The YC
window is activated with a simply key combo, in the window the previous two
or three clipboard contents are listed, I use the down arrow to select the
past clipboard content I want, I press Enter, and that text goes into the
Clipboard. Perfect.

Also it has other neat things. For example, if I've saved a hyperlink to
clipboard, that hyperlink is still an active link in the YC window, so I
just click on it and the webpage opens.

Thanks again.

Do you? Wink

Try this free suite of almost 50 little great utilities. It
MIGHT have something that will be useful to you.

http://www.backtec.com/free.htm

The best thing to do would be to google for "clipboard utility".
I have never seen the need for clipboard managers - of which
there hundreds - so I can't suggest one, you are just going to
have to try every one there is until you find one that you like.

If you want a program that will insert a predetermined set of
data with a shortcut, try http://www.shortkeys.com/index.htm

You might also try
http://www.wintools.com/products.htm
for some other producrs they offer.

Hi all

I've used Clipomatic for years, its a great little utility. Its only
drawback is you have to fire it up every time you boot. No matter how
you stick it in start menus it goes back to default on boot. Probably
not very well written code. Apart from that its great, has a
permanent clipboard too.

Best regards

Tony
