Post subject: Temporary hang during file search and my documents
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>win2000>general (more info?)

Hi. My win2k computer has recently been doing something that's become
rather annoying...it's hangs for about 15-20 seconds when I either
start a file/folder search, or when I try to open a file form the 'my
documents' folder.

When I do a search, I type in the search string and hit start search,
at which point it hangs. I can minimize the window at that stage, but I
can't remaximize it until about 15-20 seconds has passed, when the hang
stops and the filesearch starts as normal.

When I try to open a file under my documents, I get similar behavior.
After minimizing (after the hang has started), if I rightclick on the
toolbar icon for the mydocs filder and click 'close', I get the
'program is not responding' error , and have to kill manually. If I
don't do that, the file I clicked on will usually open ok, after about
20 seconds. The hang situation for mydocs seems worse tho as, if during
the hang period, I move another window etc over it , the mydoc window
is not refreshed, and often I can't do anything at all.

Someone has told me it may be looking for a device which was
uninstalled incorrectly etc., but I don't know what that would be, or
how to fix if so. Thanks for any info!

BH

Odds are it is looking for a drive letter or network share that no
longer exists or is off-line.

I tried removing all the shared folders I have, and also the links
under 'my network places', but that hasn't helped. I should of
mentioned that I also see the hang when I simply try to create a new
folder in any directory...as soon as I right click and scroll down the
the 'new' option, the pulldown menu freezes for 15 seconds or so. I
created a new user account and then tried file search etc from there,
but there it was also fine..so its something to do with the account Im
using (administrator).

I think the 'new' pause is Windows scanning the registered new-menu
programs for their icons.

Also, if you have alot of files on the drive, or in particular, one
directory with ALOT of files or subdirectories, certain functons can
cause Windows to scan all file entries, adding up file sizes to
determine free space (maybe?).
